VSL Special Edition - separate hard drive

Hey folks, I just received my VSL Special Edition DVD collection. I hadn't caught earlier that it 'requires' a separate 'fast' hard drive. Could I get away with keeping them on my laptop? I'm still new at all this. I'm running Pro Tools now, and may use Sibelius/Kontakt player extensively with VSL if that works. If not, what constitutes a 'fast' hard drive? Can it be a USB-connected drive? Regards, Kevin

Fast drive is :  Sata II or Sata III or a Raid of disk or SSD

Hi Kevin, 

you can also use a drive connected with FW400/800. Make sure that the drive has 7200 rpm and a fast access time, for optimum performance.

USB 2 is the slowest protocol, but it can work for small arrangements.

I'm interested in this as well. My laptop has a 7200RPM drive. Will that work for -small- arrangements if I'm travelling.

IOW: there isn't a -requirement- to have a 2nd HD, right? VSL will 'work', right? It's just that the performance will be severely reduced if you try to stream from the same drive as your DAW.

Please confirm?

You can get an external drive that's portable. DOn't know if you're Windows or Mac, but I just bought this external drive for my wife's Macbook Air. It's portable, runs at 7200 rpm and has a variety of connections to choose from.

Can you use VSL SE on a machine with -one- HD, so long as it's 7200RPM? (I understand the performance issues). I just wanna know for doing sketches on my laptop if I bring my dongle with me... or if this is a strict requirement.

Yes, it possible to work with the internal system HD, and it should work for small sketches (unfortunately "small" is a relative term).

Hi Kevin a few years ago I ran SE and a bunch of other stuff on a dualcore Dell laptop, with a USB drive, the SE always worked fine, it's low maintenance as with everything else I've ever bought from VSL. A laptop/single drive or FW/USB secondary drive is not ideal, but you can get away with it for sure if you aren't creating full compositions with x-billion tracks. I can say that from experience:)
