need help with Velocity X-Fade

Hello hello ! I'm very new with vienna instruments and I started watching the tutorials to try new controls. I have a question.. I have a keystation 88es controller. So I only have one wheel (sadly). The wheel is assigned to staccato to sustain and portamento, exchangeable when I move the mod wheel up and down. Now I want to add the velocity X-fade control to my notes. I would like to know which would be the easiest way for me to add this control. I noticed that I can assign the Velocity X-fade (on and off) to a key. I tried assigning it to a note on my controller, without success. It seems it can only be assigned to one of my wheels; so the mod wheel or the pitch bend. My mod wheel is already assigned to other controls ! Pitch bend one can't properly put on and off the velocity control. (I'd like a button to put it on, then use my mod wheel to play with the velocity, then shutting off the velocity control with that same button so my mod wheel is back to the staccatos etc. controls again.) Is there a way to assign the On and Off velocity x-fade to a note on my midi controller ? Or is it recommended to buy an external module with more wheels and buttons ? I guess you are not using Logic as your sequenzer?

Otherwise, in Logic (maybe in other software too), you could create some environment objects to make your wish come true.

Thanks for your reply. Na I'm on a good ol' PC and I'm using Cubase 5. :p I'm not much aware of the environment objects you're referring to, sadly. I'm still have this issue and also a simpler problem but I don't want to start a new topic for such a noobie question. If anyone can respond to this here, please do and thanks. :) Sometimes in my projects I tend to have to pump up the vienna instruments to their maximum volume level. I move up their respective fader but when I feel it is not enough, I go into the main "vienna instruments" screen and I move up a little the volume wheel on the right of the controller in the interface. But I'm having issues there : the volume controller tends to reset itself back to its original setting..

You need to set a controller for each of the functions you have been describing. as you have no control surface, you will need to do these manually. If you go to Map Control in the VI interface you will be able to set the CC number you want for each function.

Then in Cubase you can just draw in the controller lanes in the key editor.

Maybe the using of this X-Fading seems to be a bit complicated.

Thanks to you two !! Very nice. This helped me lots, and it is a great idea to manually draw this velocity control in the key editor. But as I see where this is going, it might be a good idea to grab myself extra controllers. :) Do you guys have one particular favorite module (or control surface) with buttons and controllers to suggest me ?

I personally don't use a hardware controller for entering X-Fade-Datas. It is a bit different here with X-Fade and you can't compare it with midi curves. The problem: If you cross the border from one to the other layer the sound can change quickly. In other words: It isn't always a linear matter. Therefore you often need to correct curves which are recorded with a hardware controller... That's the reason why I directly use the mouse.

So for a first approach I suggest to use drawing-tools of you daw as well (lines, curves, etc.).
