  • Basic Keyswitching Question in Logic/Vienna

So I'm pretty new to the technological game, and I'm sure this is a basic question, but I wanted to know how one achieves basic keyswitching in Logic with Vienna Ensemble. Everything is running fine for me, but I can only get one articulation per channel, and when I switch articulations in the middle of playing, it simply changes the entire recording to that articulation. I read somewhere that putting Chase Notes on would solve this, but I did that and nothing changed. Any help will be appreciated, I'm sure I'm doing something dumb, but I've spent a while trying to figure it out and can't. Thanks a bunch!

    Hi cflast01,

You will find our video tutorials on the Vienna Instruments very helpful!

The first one will explain the matrix concept right away!

  • Hi, thanks for the response. I understand the ideas behind the Matrices and patches and everything, the problem is that when I switch between patches in Logic, the entire recording of that instrument becomes that patch. Say I have a violin. I made the patches for the different articulations key switches from C1 to A1. I start out with 4 bars of tremolo (A1), and then have four bars of sustain (F1). However, when I switch between bar 4 and bar 5 from Tremolo to Sustain with the keyswitches, all 8 bars switch to sustain in the recording. Then, if I try to redo the first 4 bars in tremolo, the next 4 bars will also be in tremolo. I'm trying to understand how to get more than one articulation into a track in Logic, because what it's doing is changing the entire track into whichever articulation I last switched to.

  • Hi cflast01,

A shot in the dark: You have to record the keyswitches in Logic, simply switching in the matrix with the mouse doesn´t change anything, the articulation will stay the same.

Don´t forget to set a keyswitch right before you start to play your sequence, otherwise the first note will always be the last articulation you selected in the matrix!

  • Hello, I'm having trouble with the keyswitches as well but for me it's just that they are NOT doing anything. I've followed step by step the tutorial as I thought I was just being stupid and making a mistake somewhere as it's an easy manipulation BUT it stil doesn't do anything. For instance, I have loaded VI staccato in my first cell and VI sustain in my second horizontal cell. I now want C1 & C#1 to control the H-SPAN. So I choose keyswitches as controllers and I set up C1 and C#1. Now, when I actually play C1 or C#1 on my keyboard to switch between cells, it just doesn't do anything. I can see the midi going in and " playing " C1 or C#1 but no switching is happening. I think it's just me being silly somewhere but I really can't find where. Thank you ! Rick E'

  • Hi Rick,

there are 2 MIDI Standards, unfortunately. We have used the one with C4= middle C on an 88key keyboard, Logic uses C3= middle C.

    Just try one octave lower.

  • you can change in the Logic preferences the middle C so it fits with VSL

It is in pref/display/general/display middle C as :

  • to change articulation I use Bank and Program changes, I have wrote a big Environment in Logic to do so

I use VSL presets, all is done on Logic side to fit VSl presets

EVERIBODY THAT  USES VSL and LOGIC are waiting that Apple adds articulation changes in Logic's score !!!!!

  • Dear Cyril,

Apologies for hijacking the thread, could you elaborate on using bank change in Logic with VSL.

    Many thanks.

    Hello

The bank change allow you to change the instrument, and the program change the matrix

You must create a custom bank change for each instrument

    Best

  • Hi Cyril,

Do you have to have VSL wired to an external instrument or multi instrument then?

    Many thanks

to have bank changes you need a multi that will be connected to your VSL instrument or to your VE

    Hi Cyril,

Could yopu explain a bit more about using the bank change to change the instrument, and how you have this set up.

    Many thanks
