  • Audio via VE Pro is stuttering (Logic on iMac i7 Host and Play 3 on fastest PC Slave)

    Hello,

in July I wrote a post regarding this problem. Shortly after that I thought I found a solution when setting up static IP-Adresses. I couldn´t prove that for a long time because shortly after that I had to move my studio to a different place and now there´s the same problem as before. It doesn´t seem that it depends on Ip-Adress-Issues.

When I play on my Masterkeyboard on the iMac/Logic with VE Pro an LAN-connected-Instance of Play 3 on VE Pro Server 64 on the PC I get a stuttering sound.

I´m sure my Hardware cannot be the reason for this problem:

    Host:  iMac i7 mid 2010, 8 GB Ram, Logic 9.1.4 + VE Pro 4 (Version 4.1.8861)

    Slave: PC, i7 990x, Mainboard: Asrock x58 Extreme 6 (6x SATA3), 24 GB RAM  Kingston HyperX DDR3 1600

    1x 128 GB SSD Crucial M4 Host-Drive on SATA3 Windows 7 64 Bit + VE PRO 4 (Version 4.1.8861)

5x 256 GB SSD Crucial M4 Sample-Drives on SATA3, only PLAY 3 Libraries (splitted): Complete Composers Collection, Hollywood Strings Diamond, Hollywood Brass Diamond

The Monitors are connected via RME Fireface UFX via USB to the iMAC

    What I already tried:

    - I already tried different combinations of Buffersettings in Logic and the VE Pro Instance in the iMac-Host - this didn´t help.

    - I searched again on EW-Community and VSL-Community and read all new Threads and couldn´t find any answer.

    - I tried out different Samplerates (44100/48000/etc) in Logic, different Buffersizes (32 - up to 512 /1024) in Logic, different Latency Buffers in VE Pro AU PlugIn (none/1 Buffer/ 2 Buffers), different Threadnumbers for one VE Pro Instance on SlavePC, different Voice-SetUps in Play in VE Pro on SlavePC, at least I connected Mac and PC via LAN without switch: but all this didn´t help. (I´m using the Ethernet-Switch because the Euphonix MC Mix and MC Control need a LAN-Connection to the iMac too. Its a TEG-S5g (5-Port, 10,100,1000gBit) I can´t check the LAN-cable-type..)

    - At East West Support Forum someone wrote that he had to decrease the Audio-Buffersize below 128. I tried this but the exact opposite happens when I modify the I/O Buffersize in Logic Preferences/Audio/CoreAudio from 1024 to 64 and 32: The sound changes for the worse, the more I decrease the more it sounds more staccato-alike instead of clean. (Even if I modify the other Options like VE Pro Buffer Latency):

At 32 to 256 it´s stuttering like Snownoise from more to less.

At 512 there is a nearly clean sample sound quality and after 4-5 seconds there´s a short pause about 1 second in between the sample = slow stuttering.

At 1024 there is nearly no pause and for the most part a clean sample sound. After a while it begins to stutter again.

    - I´m using a RME Fireface UFX connected with USB 2.0 on iMac for Audio-Monitoring. Even when I use the iMac Speakers without the RME Fireface UFX the problem persists. So the RME Fireface UFX cannot be the Bottleneck in the whole Hardware-Setup.

Did I forget to modify an option in VE Pro on the Slave PC? What can I do?

    thx in advance

  • I am running a very similar setup and not  having those issues. The only  real difference is  that  I am running more recnt versions of both Logic 9 and VE Pro, so you might  try updating. Make sure  that  you have the most recent version of Play 3 as well.

  • Hello Ashermusic, thx for help. Are you sure this could be a Version-issue? I think this should already work with the Versions that I'm using...ok who knows..

I already use the most actual Version Play 3.0.25 from 10th October 2011.

The Logic Version 9.1.5 I can't find a Page to upgrade to Version 9.2 ...my Mac-Software-actualizer doesn't offer the download.

The VE Pro Version is build 8861 from 2.9.2011 the next Version is VE Pro 4 build 9753

    - still thinking the barely-actual-version-issue shouldn't be a reason (but hoping;) I'll try to update...tomorrow I can give feedback...

  • Did you prehaps rename the Logic Pro app to something like Logic Pro 9.1.5? If so, it  will not show up in software update.

And no I am not sure that is the issue but frequently updating software solves problems for no apparent reason in my experience.
