CPU usage when VE Pro 5's audio engine is stopped

Task Manager shows quite a lot of CPU usage for "Vienna Ensemble Pro x64.exe" even when I stop the audio engine for the 2 loaded instances I have. It's lower than when the audio engines are running, but still quite high: oscillates between 7 and 9 on a Core i7 920.

Why is VE Pro using 8% of the CPU when it's not supposed to do anything?
