  • Can you mix 64 bit PC with a 32 bit MAC PRO for VE-5

Friends I need some advice.. I have posted a problem of Clicks and pops when I use VE-5 . It usually occurs when I exceed 5 or 6 channels or instruments.  One thing that was suggested is to "bump' up the RAM.   I agree... however this opens up a whole batch of problems.  I have a PC which holds all of my Vienna instruments and VE5.  It is a Intel core 2 Quad CPU 2.666 Ghz running Win Vista. The mother board is a Asus P5QL PRO.  It currently has only 4 gig of RAM. That is the limit for Vista.   My MAC PRO which I use for PT-9 is a Dual- core intel Xeon 3 Ghz with 8 Gig Ram.  Currently I use the server of VE-5 to bring VE into PT-9 via an instrument channel. Links up like a dream.  No Problems until I start with heavy MIDI data and several  VI's.

Both computers are in 32 bit mode.  From my limited knowledge of PC's I  believe I can update my PC to Windows 7 which would break the 4 gig limit. I could then install up to 16 gig of RAM. That is the limit for the P5QL PRO motherboard. That would make my PC 64 bit.  I think....  BUT I'm not sure if my MAC is ready for 64 bit.  It's getting a bit old and I'm not sure if PT -9 addresses the 64 bit problem.  Can I still load up the VE server on my MAC and still use VE? Can you mix 32 bit and 64 bit?  Or is it better to just purchase a more powerful 64 bit PC and wait for the MAC Pros to refresh as well..  Any thoughts on this would help... Sorry for the long post but I wanted to touch all the points for a proper answer.
    Respectfully,
    Mike

  • Shouldn't be an issue...as VEP runs on the pc (64bit) and just send audio/midi over Ethernet to the Mac which is just a stream of 24bit audio and 8bit midi. The Mac doesn't actually address any of the instruments' ram samples--just the resulting sends midi and returns audio streams.

  • Thank you popmann for the reply.... So, for now I could update my PC to windows 7,and bump up the RAM to 8 or 16.. That might help some performance issues I am having. Also, from your answer I can still continue to use the MAC, sending the VE over the ethernet regardless if the MAC is 32 bit.

Actually, audio is sent as 32-bit float from slave to master.

  • O.K. So when I insert the VEP - server on my MAC master instrument channel do I click 32 bit or 64bit?  ...

You should pick the same architecture as your host is using. When running Logic in 32-bit mode, you should pick the 32-bit plugin. When in 64-bit mode, insert the 64-bit plugin.

Then you run the server in whatever architecture you want. You can run the 32- and 64-bit servers in parallel, in case you have plugins that are only 32-bit.

  • 5 or 6 channels? And you get clicking? Increasing ram only increases speed of what you're doing is running out. 8 gb? 5 VSL instruments? I've got 8 gb and can pretty well load the entire contents of the solo and chamber strings. I don't think you're running out. Are you trying to solve the clicking? Just increase the buffer on the PC.

Actually, is the clicking in the vsl sound ONLY...or all of Logic glitching?

  • That's good to hear, however I'm going to increase the RAM to 12 gig anyway because I want to try MIR and I want to get out of 32 bit mode. I 'll try the PC buffer and see.
