  • Akai EWI (midi controller) and VSL?

Does anyone have experience using the Akai Ewi with VSL?

How do they work together? Is the  EWI USB adequate or is their a reason why one would need the EWI 4000s?

    thx!

    d.

  • I have the EWI USB, but actually find the combination of Breath Controller and keyboard more useful for VSL samples.

  • DG, are you a piano player or is there something about the EWI in particular that was challenging with VST?

    Thanks for the help!

Yes, I do play the piano to professional standard, but that's not it. In order to play VSL instruments well, there are an enormous number of keyswitches that need to be used, to get a convincing performance. It makes no sense to try to play the shorter articulations with breath control, as they don't work well that way, so I need a keyboard for those. The constant changing of input devices was just too cumbersome for me, whereas the BC just hangs around my neck, and I can play the keyboard, blow and/or keyswitch all at the same time.

I do use the EWI for Samplemodeling Instruments, and have no intention of going back to keyboard and BC for those instruments.

  • Thanks, DG.

I was hoping the EWI would proove to be as useful with all the VSL instruments that I am about ot purchase as it is with Sample Modeling's instruments.

Is there another controler that one would recommend for using with VSL? I know much of VSL's control lies in keyswitches, but having some nobs and faders at one's control (like the evolution UC-33e) looks like it would be very useful.

  • I use keyboard, BC and Lemur for everything "wind" related, apart from Samplemodeling Instruments. I used to have a separate CME keyboard, that had lots of knobs and faders, as well as BC input and that served me well, but the Lemur us so much more flexible. However, they are discontinued, so you would need to find another solution, I'm afraid.

  • Hm...

Maybe the ipad would actually bee a good alternative then?

  • Does iPad have any USB connectors, Ethernet, or just WiFi? If the latter, then it would remove any chance of working at low latencies without clikcs and pops.

  • Yes...supports CoreMIDI over USB or dock connectors...but, how is it a replacement for a controller you BLOW into?

  • Sorry...you're just looking for ways to control vsl. I've yet to sit down and really contemplate the ways I can control it with the Kronos's couple joysticks, ribbon, buttons, faders, knobs...I would think the humanize slider would be a no brainer...maybe the lpf....I don't have any vsl wind samples...

That's interesting. I looked at the Tech Specs, and couldn't see anything about a USB connector. Has the specification recently been enhanced? I have no knowledge about dock connectors, so I can't help there.
