  • Will you use thunderbolt instead of Ethernet ?

Hello, I'm thinking about my futur equipment. I'm waiting for the new macpro release that I want buy as main computer and I will install Vepro on a thunderbolt macmini. Will it be possible to connect them using thunderbolt ? (Ethernet = 100 Mbit/s, Thunderbolt= 10 000 Mbit/s) Thank you

  • No, it's Ethernet only at the moment. In the long term anything is possible, but currently using Thunderbolt would only be possible for a tiny minority of customers, so I doubt that even thinking about it would be a priority for the developers.

  • I think you should think about the near futur if you are a "developer" ! Thunder bolt is already here, wake up !! : http://www.uaudio.com/interfaces/apollo.html#tab=features;scroll=features

  • It's not really that close. For a start it is only available on Macs, which is already a minority. Then consider that it is only available on new Macs, which considering how long most people keep their machines, is an even smaller number. Then you have to consider that when it is available for PCs, it will again only be on new machines, and only Intel ones, so far.

This all means that take up will be pretty slow, so for the foreseeable future Ethernet is a far bigger target market.

  •  Ethernet can run up to 100Gbit/s,  though most motherboards run up to 1Gbit/s.  So thunderbolt at 100Mbit/s is somewhat slower.  The UA link you mention , is UA announcing how much faster thunderbolt is than firewire.  VE Pro is already using a 1Gbit/s ethernet, so I don't see how a 100Mbit/s thunderbolt could be any better, seeing that it is ten times slower than existing networks.

  • Check this page: http://www.online-tech-tips.com/computer-tips/usb-2-0-vs-usb-3-0-vs-esata-vs-thunderbolt-vs-firewire-vs-ethernet-speed/ Here is what we can read: To summarize the above data, the connection types would result in the following, from fastest to slowest. 1. Thunderbolt 2. USB 3.0 3. eSATA 4. Firewire 5. USB 2.0 6. Ethernet. So, if ethernet is 100Gb/s why don't we use this protocole for audio interface ? it must have limitations ...

  • Are you experiencing any limits with Gigabit ethernet, causing you to wish for some Thunderbolt implementation? In that case, could you describe your setup that hits the bandwidth limits of Gigabit ethernet?

On my side, using VE Pro on the same machine is always better than on remote machine.

I can set the Daw at lower buffer size when VE Pro is on the same computer as the sequencer.

My slave is directly connected via Ethernet cable, no switch or router.

I use WiFI for internet connection only.

Is there something I can change in my settings for optimizing ethernet performance?

  • reporting better performance as local host seems peculiar. are your network settings for static or dynamic IP?

  • It is quite natural that latencies can be lower when VEPro is running on the same machine as the host app. The local implementation does not even use tcp locally, but shared memory regions, which speeds up things.
