  • How to assign cores?

I run WIN 7 (64), Cubase 5 (64), Vienna MIR (legacy 1860) and - within my MIR-template - up to 80 VI Pro's. All this on one DAW (specs below).

The programs (WIN 7, Cubase 5 etc.) are stored on one hard-drive (C:\). Projects are stored on another hard-drive (D:\), while the sample-content is stored on two further hard-drives (E:\ and F:\).

This set-up has worked well so far, as generally not more than 20 tracks/instruments have been in use. Now, exceeding that number of tracks/instruments used, I'm confronting severe audio-crackles, distortion and drop-outs.

All samples are fully loaded, so that is not the problem. Also CPU never goes beyond 20%, and RAM has 8 GB left.

    What is the problem?

Could it be that I should assign specific cores to WIN 7, Cubase, MIR etc. to make sure that each application runs correctly?

If so: How do I do that (haven't found any tool in WIN and cubase) and how many cores should be assigned?

Is there anything else I should consider?

Any ideas and comments are highly appreciated.

    Kind regards

  • I have the same problem on my Mac with Logic !

  • Hi Cyril,

have you found any help on this somewhere else in the forum? As far as I can see, the problem has been described by several users every now and then; however, I could not find any substantial hints on how to solve this.

In some other thread DG recommended to assign specific cores for each program - without saying how to do this.

Maybe someone from VSL could jump in here? Sounds like a re-appearing issue of general importance (at least for some of us) ...

    Cheers, Dirk

  •  Hey, don't drag me into this.....! I was talking specifically about Pro Tools, where you have to assign a number of cores to the program (at least one less than you actually have), and VEP, where you can assign how many threads you want to use per instance.

However, if you really want to mess around with assigning number of cores to specific programs (at your own risk) then:

    1. Open Task Manager
    2. On the Processes Tab, find your program and right click the name
    3. Click Set Affinity
    4. Uncheck the cores that you don't want this program to use.

Of course every time you start the program again it will have "forgotten" its settings. It is possible to run a script to do all of this automatically, but see how you get on first.

  • It looks like they are having problems because the develloper that was speaking with since over a year and this with the late benediction of Dietz,  did not answer to my last 3 mails and when I wrote asking him what was the problem  he told me that now I have to go thru support.

So I have open a case at the support@vsl.co.at yesterday let's wait and see what us there answer :

    here is my mail

    --------

    Hello VSL
I have a Logic song that is using most of the instruments of a  VE SERVER that is using MIR with 7.1
In this song I have also other instruments from PLAY and a few EXS that are not going to the VE
When I play the song the tracks are not in sync

What have I done wrong ?

As they are still problems with MIR, on the forum I was asking guidance If you have clicks, pops, big cracks, missing note, hanging note, notes not playing in time...

Thanks in advance for your help

    Best

    Cyril

No worry, DG... [:)] I did not mean to drag you into anything, I just recalled you digressing on "assigning cores" somewhere in this forum... and was right, though.

So what are the risks of messing around with cores in WIN 7? Do you recommend it? Does it influence the performance for the better?

    Kind regards

The risks are that your system may become unstable. The benefits are that it might improve performance. Try it and see if it works. If not, a re-boot will put you back where you were.
