So I dusted off my old Dual 2GHz and managed to track down a copy of OS 10.5.7. Purchased a new dongle, downloaded the VE host software, connected it all up and managed to get everything to talk to everything else. Nice.
....except (of course) none of the software I intended to use is PPC compatible. Kontakt, EWHS etc.
It's obvious in retrospect. But I thought I'd just mention it as other posters seem to be heading down this road. No good if you want to use the latest versions.
Well, I can't speak for anyone else on PPC, but in my case the whole idea was to get ALL virtual instruments off of my G5 because it couldn't handle too much going on. So, my rig consists of ProTools HD (TDM) as master in the G5 (the only virtual instrument I run on it is Ivory), and a win7 PC running the VEP servers (32bit and 64bit) hosting all my virtual instruments. All audio is piped back into Pro Tools. Of course, I'm stuck at PT v8, but eveything is quite stable and sounds great, so no complaints. VEP has breathed new life into my G5, and I'm able to run a massive template of instruments, and still use my Pro Tools rig (PCI) to record and mix on.
So, you're right that the PPC can't handle the latest greatest virtual instruments, but I would suspect that most people who are still using one, are not using it for virtual instruments hosting in any demanding sort of way.

PPC is great for "legacy" software that can't run elegantly any other way. I run on my PPC:
The Grand 2 by Steinberg (I just have a a particular liking fo this piano set)
VE Pro 4 Server 32 hosting Kontakt 3, in turn hosting NI LX Piano through Guitar Rig 3 (you can't run GR 3 any other way without hogging the life out of an Intel machine (YMMV) and GR 4 does NOT load GR 3 sounds correctly).
Spectrasonics Trilogy often gets an airing on my PPC too. I have done this via Kore Player hardwired, and not tried this through VE Pro.
But yes, forget running anything that NEEDS K4 and up (eg Spitfire).
I have also used it as an external effects rack, running Altiverb etc. Or one could consider using it for Powercore, if you have it, to presever THAT particular piece of "legacyware". Whether or not plugs work via VE Pro is anybodies guess, but I have tested Powercore this way and the few plugs I tried DID work.
I have also run VI on the PPC too. It used to be my woodwind deck. But a little pointless now with the power of the newer Macs.
Don't sell that PPC. You will get £100 and then regret it immediately.
