  • Trumpet Harmon Mute

I'm very excited to have just bought VSL SE! I did a lot of comparison shopping, and two VSL demos that are very persuasive, in my opinion, are the beginning of "Rite of Spring, Part I" (for woodwinds, which I realize can't be achieved with SE alone) and "Fanfare for the Common Man" (for brass).

However, as I was having my mind blown listening to "Rite of Spring", right after the awesome Eb clarinet part a couple of minutes in, the trumpet comes in with a harmon mute! What?! I gotta say, after being initially perplexed, I find it kind of comical. Don't get me wrong, I went with VSL despite this because I think the good things outweigh.

But not having trumpet straight mutes is a pretty big oversight for supposedly industry-leading orchestra samples. (I haven't listened enough to muted trombone excerpts to know if the same issue exists with them.)

I saw that there have been posts about this before -- about a year ago was the last one I think -- so I'm wondering if anyone knows if this has been addressed or if there are plans to address it?

    Thanks!!

  • I hope you enjoy your library. I have SE and SE+ and love it. I also bought Hollywood Strings recently, and while they are amazing for some things, I like VSL better overall (and of course, SE has more than just strings).

  • This issue has been brought up from time to time. VSL has never commented on it, but i am quite sure that deep in their hearts they must know that omitting straight mutes i a library that is supposed to cover all aspects of orchestral sound reproduction is a grave mistake.

God only knows why it has not been dealt with.

  • I think it's kind of a strange choice myself.  For that matter as comprehensive as the library is why not cup mute as well.  Oh well.
