  • The Future of Sibelius? A Situation to Watch

Things are getting far too interesting (again) in the world of Avid-land.  They have sold off all of their consumer lines: M-Audio to inMusic (owner of Akai, among others) and their consumer video line to - of all companies - Corel.  Note that Avid is keeping the Fast Track line of interfaces.

So far the official word about Sibelius, is that it is staying with Avid.  However, Avid is closing the main office of Sibelius.  Avid is also - again - reducing the size of their employee base, this time by about 10%.

It is not at all clear what this might mean, in the end, for Sibelius.  Nor would I wish to jump to any premature, and possibly wrong, conclusions.  IMO, the situation needs to be watched, and hopefully many Sibelius users will let Avid know of their concerns.

While I happen to use Finale, notation programs are such a niche market that the potential loss of any one of them would hurt.

  • Yeah this is not good...

Avid purchased everything in sight. The once great company for professionals, absorbed far too many consumer products, and now must sell in order to maintain its professional edge.

I have only one question... what will happen to Euphonix?

Beyond ProTools, Sibelius, Media Composer, many of us have large investments in Euphonix Hardrware.

In 2010 Avid purchased them as well.

    Find the Avid story here:

  • The closure of the London Sibelius office and in particular the loss of Daniel Spreadbury to Sibelius is more than a disaster it is the end of Sibelius. What sort of corporate idiot can't see that Daniel is Sibelius and has been for a decade and if they ditch him within a very short time Sibelius will go the way of the dinosaurs. idiots.

I have a serious suggestion - Please VSL buy up Sibelius and Daniel Spreadbury before AVID ruin it and him. VSL and Sibelius in the same camp would be the perfect solution.

If your as furious as I am post a comment here http://community.avid.com/blogs/avid/archive/2012/07/07/sibelius-community.aspx

  • Very sad news from Sibelius. I like the idea of Daivd very much. Would be an ideal pair: VSL and Sibelius!

Oh yes,  this could be the opportunity of the century for VSL - the best scoring program* with the best orchestral library -  that idea would have my support all the way...

    * apologies to Finale users for the slightly biased definition of Sibelius.

  • There is more information about this at sibeliususers.org including a petition to Avid to sell it back to the Finn Brothers.

  • I stopped using Finale because of the Garritan.

I don't think it a good idea to merge sibelius and VSL.

It's like buyng an integrated stereo HIFI

if the cd player stops working you have to wait for the radio and amplifier as well to return after servicing

  •  A company like Avid will maintain a cash cow like Sibelius by moving the work to the cheapest outsourcing it can find. Watch if you must, but don't expect innovation or responsiveness and expect cosmetic changes with no real substance. If you want to understand how outsourcing works, search "Dilbert" and "Elbonia" on the web.

  • It would indeed be terrible if Daniel Spreadbury left Sibelius, but so far he hasn't. There are postings on his Sibelius blog from mid-August, and his fb page still lists his employer as "Avid." No idea what this means, of course ...
