  • Impressions of VSL After Two Months...

I had come from QLSO Gold to VSL. I was happy with many things in QLSO and still am, but was intrigued by the power promised and the demos heard by Vienna.

I have done several projects now, from rock, to musicals, to very orchestral. I am still learning and still haven't heard everything in the library (has anyone??).

I have had some problems with the legatos in the Pro Edition Strings using the P Tool, they still sound problematic and very un-legato like at times.

    That aside...

I must say that this library has completely changed the level of my finished product to not just a great degree, but to an astonishing degree, and this is not exaggerating. I cannot remember any piece of gear I have ever purchased that affected my work in a more positive manner than VSL has. It is indeed all it is cracked up to be. I can think of many things I'd love to hear in the library, as we all can, and there are some puzzling decisions here and there. But overall, I just want to say thanks to the crew at VSL for this incredible library, and all it holds for the future. I ordered the PERCUSSION PRO EDITION today, completing the CUBE for me, and have also ordered SAXES. I think I need a VSL tee shirt at this point.

    Just stunning, amazing stuff.

  • I second an offical VSL t-shirt [:)]

That would be quite cool. [:D]

  • Hi Tom,

What problems are you having with the legato strings? Have you tried increasing the release times as I've found that it makes all the difference?

    Andy.

This is due to a shortened release time, a change which I don't really agree with. You can change this with the Giga editor.

  • andy are you talking about a change with the p-tool or in giga editor? I would love to hear your soloution.

I've edited the release times in the Giga Editor by adding about .2 of a second (there's a thread 'Leg Strings: Discovery' in which Herb explains how to do this and also how to route the release times to a CC).

With the Perf Tool I tend to find that a Legato threshold of 0 and Release time of 65 works best for my keyboard technique with ensemble string patches.

    Hope this helps,

    Andy.

I've increased the times in the Tool, and ONCE IN AWHILE, it helps. But nothing consistent. The problems I'm having are only in the strings, the woodwinds and brass are great.

The problem sounds just like what would happen if you were trying to play legato on any other normal library, lines sound choppy and the great "sucking sound" is prevalent. I have never edited anything in the Giga Editor so I'm going to have to learn I suppose.

I'll try to find that thread from Herb. Is this something VSL could offer as a downloadable fix?

  • There's only so much the Perf Tool release times can do without actually getting your hands dirty in the Giga Editor......have fun!

    Andy.

  • where in giga editor do you increase release times? I can't find that thread you were talking about.

here is the thread andy is referring to and here some additional notes, at least i hope it is

and remember: only a CRAY can run an endless loop in just three seconds.
  • I wholeheartedly SUPPORT following the instructions in the editor to tie the release times with CC. This makes all the difference. I am a GS editor idiot and I could follow the instructions given [:D]

    Good luck to you.

Just followed Herb's instructions and it works great. Solves the problems I was having very well. It's a joy to play the violins now!

    Thanks so much!

    Tom,
Make certain the velocities of the legato note groups are the same or within the same range so they play the same legato sample. When, for example, you go from a softer to a louder velocity layer in the same legato group, it sounds abrupt.

  • there is only one velocity layer in legato patches.....

This is what all those dynamics-samples in the Library are meant to be used for.

  • My music too sounds a million times better now that I have the Cube. Yes thanks indeed for the meticulous work! [:D]

My main complaints are the inconsistencies with the duration of the dynamics
(I did post to inquire about this but never got a reply from the VSL team as to why http://community.vsl.co.at/viewtopic.php?t=2824&highlight=dynamics">http://community.vsl.co.at/viewtopic.php?t=2824&highlight=dynamics) and the lack of a "pedal feature" for the harp.

Opps! When I was writing this I was thinking about maintaining velocity for non-legato samples in order to get better legato not legato samples. Thanks for pointing that out.

On these same lines though, is VSL planning on supplying/selling .art files for GS 3.0 users that combine dynamic legato samples into one .gsp so we can have velocity layered legato?

Yes, unfortunately a lot of users think dynamic legato/stac repetition samples can only be used in a "repetition mode" , but that's false, herb described the technique here [:)]
