  • Advice on SSD for Mac Pro 2009

Anybody is willing to give me an advice for buying an SSD drive for my Mac Pro?

it is for a 2009 2.66 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon Mac pro.

    Here's the Serial-ATA specs:

    Intel ICH10 AHCI:

      Vendor: Intel

      Product: ICH10 AHCI

      Link Speed: 3 Gigabit

      Negotiated Link Speed: 1.5 Gigabit

      Description: AHCI Version 1.20 Supported

I need around 400GB of spaces for my samples.

I was thinking of two 240GB drive because its cheaper than a 512GB.

And It chould be faster to store my sample accross two drive.

Should I check for 3G or 6G SSD?

Looks like my computer is limited to 3G but can I put a 6G in it in case I buy a new computer in the futur and keeping the SSD?

What other specs or brands should I check?

    Thanks for any help

It is better to use a Sata III (6 Gb/s) but you will be limited to 3 Gb/s

I have put a Rocketraid SATA III card in my Macpro to have the full benefit of SATA III ; with it you can mount your SSD in a Raid 0 allowing more speed

  • thanks For your help Cyril!

I see what happened. I've check the DVD-RW specs instead of one of the HD slot.

    The real specs are:

    Vendor: Intel

      Product: ICH10 AHCI

      Link Speed: 3 Gigabit

      Negotiated Link Speed: 3 Gigabit

      Description: AHCI Version 1.20 Supported

    Makes more sense like this.
So a Rocketraid SATA III PCIe Card with two SSD 6G (mounted in Raid 0 or not) and i'm in business.
What RocketRaid model do you have, the 620 or 622. I didn't find any mention about Mac compatibilties/Drivers.

  • I got the Rocketraid on Apple store in US

    http://store.apple.com/us/product/H1113LL/A?

I should be able to get it elswhere for cheaper but I wanted Apple support in case of !!

  • Hi guys,

Would you happen to know if this RocketRAID card would be appropriate for my Mac Pro Early 2008 if I wish to install an SSD?

What SSD would you recommend? Something like this?

    Thanks!

  • Orchestranova,

Yes this RocketRaid eSata card is fine for your early 2008 Mac Pro (giving you an affordable / Raidable Sata III upgrade)...

If you're only planning to use a single SSD, the speed will amaze you.

RunnIng two SSD's in Raid 0 is unbelievably fast. You have to see it to believe it.

All this made possible by RockefRaid's true Sata III 6gb performance.

As for the SSD itself. You can't go wrong with the OWC EXTREME Pro 6g.

P/S: If you don't intend to run in Raid, and you don't need to BOOT, a 6g Sata III card can be had for less than 50 dollars on the very same OWC site.

  • I use Crucial

I have no idea what is the best SSD

  • Cyril,

Which external enclosure do you use?

  • Hi Mike

I cannot remember how it is called !!! I am getting old !!!!!

it is to put in the 5.25 disk space in a PC ; how do you call this ?

    It is for 4 x 2.5 ssd

I bought it from ABIX in France

    Best

    Hi Mike and co.,

I am seriously considering an SSD for my Mac Pro Early 2008. With regards to your post, if I want 6 Gb/s speeds what components would I need? Do cards such as the RocketRaid require the SSD to be connected externally? What if I want to insert one into one of the HD bays inside my mac?

    I've been considering this SSD:

    http://www.crucial.com/uk/store/partspecs.aspx?IMODULE=CT512M4SSD2

If I used this bracket could I still get SATA III speeds in my Mac Pro model?

    Thanks for your help!

If you want to have the Sata  III you need to have a Sata III card and your ssd in an external eclosure like this

If you replace your HD with a ssd and a 2.5 to 3.5 adaptor it will run at 1,5 or 3 gb/s

People have manage to put SSD and extra HD in there Mac, but this is not supported !

  • I had a revodrive 3 on my old 2008 mac pro. A very good solution.
