  • Legato of Vienna Choir

I just got my Vienna Choir full library, and I am quite disappointed at its legato patches which I think are the most important part of a good choir library. The legato in Vienna Choir is so subtle that sometimes I can't even hear it, especially when the velocity is high. I would like to hear some opinions about using legato patches of Vienna Choir. In fact, I really hope there will be some VSL updates to improve the legato patches of Vienna Choir.

  • Hello Ondine

Please make sure that the legato (the connection-sound between two notes) only can be triggered when the gap between the notes is smaller than 50ms.

If you already know this fact sorry for mention it here.

Do you get other sounds and results?

  • Thanks for the link and comparison. I know how the the legato works, but I am expecting something like the "portamento" of VSL solo strings.

  • Hello again

As can make out the Download choire (sopranos) have a bit more "portamento".

Nice, but this can be a disadvantage with faster sequences.

I see you should have two or three different legatos:

    1. fast

    2. slow

    3. cheese fondue

  • I find the legato too bumpy, except when playing fast. This can be solved (sort of) by riding velocity xFade across every transition, but this is a PITA and a big waste of time. I hope that there is an update in the works to improve this behaviour.  [:(]

  • DG, a question out of curiousity (I am hoping to eventually add the VSL choir, but won't be able to do so for a couple of months or so):

Can the bumps be fixed, or somewhat smoothed out, by creating legato transitions of different lengths by using the stretch function in VI Pro 2?

  •  Sorry that we couldn't offered any VI PRO setups for the Choir.

Controlling the smoothness of legato intervalls is one great feature of VI PRO.

Here you have a setup workflow:

Select a loaded legato choir patchin the slot-rack of the "Advanced" view.

Select further the "Advanced" tab below the slot-rack.

Set "Start Offset Mode to "Legato"

Set "Start Offset" to a value of 40 to 50 MS.

Set "Start Offset Attack" to a value of 50 to 100 MS (depends how strong the effect should be at maximum)

Now you can control exclusively the interval legato samples with the "Start" controller assigning any midi controller of you choice to this slider.

Is the "Start" controller at 0, there will be no effect. Scaling up to maximum of 127 you will get the fulleffect you've applied in the settings described above.

When you have the impression that at fast movements the original settings are perfect and just for slower movements more smootheness is required, you can assign to the "Start" controller "Speed" instead of a common midi controller. Don't forget to click on "Invert" when you assign Speed on the "Cntrl Map".

So smootheness is applied automatically depending on the tempo of your performance.

  • Hi, Herb, I try your method on portamento of solo strings in order to exaggerate the effect, but it seems that VI Pro only makes the process of portamento shorter when start offset is set to 50. It does not make the portamento longer. The legato effect of the Vienna Choir legato patch is by default (start offset = 0 ms) and it is already quite subtle. I doubt the legato process will become longer when it is used in VI Pro. PS: By the way, when I click on "invert" of the speed, the start offset will become longer when I play it slowly, which means less portamento. It seems to do the opposite of what we expect. I hope I don't get it wrong. Thanks for your help.

  • Hi ondine,

If you want a longer portamento, you should check out the flexible time-stretching option in VI PRO, and only stretch the first, say, 50 ms of the legato/portamento. This way you get a longer transition while the rest of the notes stay untouched.

    Best,

    Paul

    Ho ondine,

my suggestions were a reply to DGs wish of smoother legatos.

Of course making things smoother is more or less the opposite effect to your request. Indeed we tried to produce the Vienna Choir legati with less portamento effect compared to the older Soprano Choir. As already mentioned here, the Vienna Choir is therefore more versatile. Medium or fast legato passages didn't work very well with the old Sopranos.
