  • Audio Drop Out in DP 7

When using DP7 and VEP on a separate server machine I very randomly get drop outs from Digital Performer. Now here is the strange part, I don't have to actually be playing back anything from VEP -- in DP7 there is a nifty audition feature (opt-spacebar) this will solo the audio file or midi file that you are playing back and just play the selected section -- when I have the VEP plug in instantiated in the session and am simply playing back an audio file that has nothing to do with VEP, I get this drop out. I have tried in sessions without any VEP AU plug instantiated and have not been able to replicate the issue. Has to be the VEP AU plug right? I thought at first that maybe it could be the buffer setting in VEP plug, I was using 0 buffers, but even when I change it to 1 I have the issue. To be clear, the audio drop out is across all channels of DP, VEP or not, and happens quite randomly. It isn't like it keeps happening at a crescendo or some other such spot... MacPro 2x2.93 Quad Core Intel Xeon, 16GB RAM / VEP 5.1.11548 Windows 7 Pro 64bit / Intel Core i7-2700K Quad Core 3.5GHz / 32GB 1333MHz DDR3 Dual Channel / 2x 480GB SSD Thanks! d

  • Same issue here which I raised in another thread.

I eventually went back to VEP 5.0 which seemed to resolve the problem. Are using Kontakt inside VEP? It may just have something to do with the settings for the number of cores you use. There is a very good post somewhere about how many cores you should set vep to and then disable multicore in Kontakt. It's complicated!  Tech guru Paul from VSL was looking into it as I remember.

  • Our discovery here, was that this happens when we are using the event plugin. Or I should say happens far far more when using thew event plugin. Otherwise I only get it a few times a week, rather than multiple times an hour.

I am using Kontakt in VEP 5 - not 5.0 but 5.4115 or something like that. I will double check the settings for the cores tomorrow. You don't have a link for that Kontakt Core disabling do you?

Interesting. I am not using the event plug in and I do get it far more often that a few times per week. Probably at least a few times per session. It only worries me as very often we have live recording sessions and I would hate for it to happen whilst I am tracking.

  • I think this is a symtom of DP running out of CPU which in DP7 isn't very difficult. I stopped using event input because it was too CPU heavy in DP - no reflection on VSL  - more to do with the inefficiency of DP7.   I have looked and can't find the definitive answer on Kontakt and multiprocessing - either Karel or Paul posted it. Someone suggested at the time it shuld be made a sticky! If either of them can point us towards it, it would be very helpful as I have a feeling that these CPU issues which is what the drop out in DP7 is I think, might be related to that. I also had a theory that the default settings may have changed between VSL EP 5.0 and 5.1 which might account for the apparent drop in performance but I haven't been able to check. If DP8 is more efficient then maybe all this will be resolved with the upgrade. Time well tell.....

Hi labman, can you please confirm that this behavious persist even with DP8?

I'm asking because I'm on the verge to upgrade to DP8 (from DP7) and to VEP5 (from VEP4), since I read that incorrect latency report and Bounce to Disk bugs has been addressed.

Anyway if I wont be able to use the long awaited event plugin (due to the aforementioned drop outs and glitches) I'd better wait for a more reliable upgrade.

    TIA

    Arceo

  • Hello Aerco, We have sort of stepped back from DP8 due to some of its other issues. If I get a chance I will run some tests with DP8 and our older event plug huge template. Might not be til early next week though. VEP5 is well worth the update.
