  • Help Please ~ Routing Vienna Ensemble Pro, Kontakt, and Cubase 6

Hello everyone. I'm using the Vienna Ensemble Pro 5 trial and and happy to say that it improves the performance and of my system. However, I'm having trouble figuring the best way to use it in Cubase 6 (mac 64-bit) with multitimbral instruments such as Kontakt. I believe that there are some general tutorials somewhere, but I'm having difficulty finding them and/or finding ones that pertain to Kontakt, specifically. Would anyone kindly help me route Vienna Ensemble Pro (with several Kontakt instruments in one Kontakt instance in additional to other plugins from Vienna)? I Thus far, I've been able to activate Cubase's stereo outputs and those in Kontakt; I've managed a system of sorts, but it's rather inefficient, so I'm looking forward to reading people's replies. My being able to route everything correctly will probably determine whether I will purchase Vienna Ensemble Pro or not. Thank you very much!

  • This is very important to me. -bump-

  • Anyone?

  • I'm not clear what the problem is, so it is difficult to help you. Perhaps it would be good to give a step by step report on what you're doing, then I, and others, may be able to spot where the issue is.

  • There isn't an "problem" per se. I would just like to know how to route a multi-out au from within VEP 5 to my host (something like Kontakt) without having to load a new instance of Kontakt for every sample library I load. For example, I load Kontakt 5 into an instrument slot in VEP, but inside that one instance of Kontakt are 4 sample instruments. How would I go about routing everything correctly?

  • I'm a bit short of time now, but basically you need to read about audio input in the manual. Not only does it deal with audio input, but it is also a way of internal routing that you are asking about.

  • I've looked and the manual's instructions are not entirely clear to me. Is there anyone here who has used VEP with Kontakt in particular?

  • Hi synchronizer,

Which parts in the manual are not entirely clear?

Did you check the chapter "Multi-timbral plug-ins in VE PRO), page 49?

Also, the "VE PRO Routing => Cubase" Chapter on page 66?

  • I looked at that page, but it doesn't explain routing in detail. At the moment when I click the small plus button, VEL Pro still sends each sample library within Kontakt through the same master bus, so I can't seem to find how to separate each sample library into different stereo outs in Cubase. In addition, when I add non-Kontakt instruments in addition to Kontakt, playing a note activates both Kontakt and the non-Kontakt instruments. Is there a video tutorial that specifically shows how one routes Kontakt in VEP 5 into Cubase with separate outputs?

  • Hi! Here is a step-by-step description on how you can achieve the routing setup you described.

    1) VEP5 Server: In "preferences" set the desired number of audio outputs for each VEP5 instance. (The number of availiable outputs being piped from VEP5 to Cubase).
    2) Cubase: load VEP5 in the VST Rack.
    3) Cubase: Click the symbol beside the loaded VEP instance to choose how many output channels Cubase shall receive from VEP5.
    4) VEP5: add an instance of Kontakt.
    5) Kontakt: Add the instruments you need inside Kontakt.
    6) Kontakt: Assign a different output to each instrument (The output tab in Kontakt, here you may have to manually set-up the outputs, depending on how your Kontakt is configured).
    7) VEP5: Add 1 "Audio Input Channel" for each of the stereo (or mono) outputs from Kontakt.
    8) VEP5: Configure each of the audio input channels to receive the specific output from Kontakt. Btw: the first output from kontakt (stereo 1/2) will be tied to the Kontakt instance itself. Therefor the first "audio input channel" should be set-up to receive Kontakt second stereo output. Click the "input" field on the "Audio Input Channel", click "Instrument", select the corresponding Kontakt instance, - click the corresponding outout.
    9) VEP5: Assign a specific output channel to each of the "audio input channels". Now you are able to send separate instruments on separate channels to Cubase.

  • Thank you very much for the step-by-step instructions! Basically, each sample library from within kontakt will take one of the 16 midi channels, and if I want to go beyond 16, I have to start using the additional MIDI INs. (There are 8 according to the drop-down menu.) This would mean that I have 128 midi channels within VE Pro. Am I correct? If so, I think that everything is set correctly. Thank you again.

  • Each Kontakt instance (hosted inside VEP5), will need to have 1 midi port assigned to it. For example: If Kontakt is the first VST you host inside VEP5, you would assign it "MIDI In: 1 VE PRO Plugin MIDI In 1". This, as you mention, gives you access to 16 midi channels inside this Kontakt instance.

In the VEP5 Server preferences you can set the number of desired midi ports for each VEP instance, up to a maximum of 48, I think. So if you wanted, you could have access to 768 midi channels per INSTANCE of VEP5. Although the downside of having to many midi ports active, is that Cubase takes a long time setting these up when loading a project, so preferably keep the number as low as you can.

    Glad you got it working!

  • It sounds like I have everything routed correctly at the moment then. Thank you for your help. Now if I wish to add non-Vienna-Instruments to my projects, I have to save a project in Vienna Ensemble and load it in Vienna Ensemble Pro. Am I correct?

  • I don't quite understand what you mean? Non-Vienna-Instruments, as in other VST plugins, such as Kontakt? In that case, yes, you have to use Vienna Ensemble Pro.

  • I'm referring to my incomplete projects that utilize both Vienna Instruments (loaded in Vienna Ensemble) and Kontakt instruments loaded in Cubase. I will be able to save my Vienna Ensemble settings and load them in Vienna Ensemble Pro so that I use in a single Vienna Ensemble Pro instance with Kontakt instruments AND VSL instruments, right? It's a matter of transferring everything, etc.

  • Dear Mr. Kopf

This guy was absolutely right,  your User Manual for VEP is completely CHAOTIC and doesn't explain MIDI routing at all. And your support doesn't reply for problems with, what is EVEN WORSE! I think people should be aware of this, before they spend money. Sorry, I have no other option but to publish this subject. DOn't treat customers that way!

  • Each Kontakt instance (hosted inside VEP5), will need to have 1 midi port assigned to it. For example: If Kontakt is the first VST you host inside VEP5, you would assign it "MIDI In: 1 VE PRO Plugin MIDI In 1".

Is there any reason why I would NOT see the "MIDI IN: 1 VE PRO Plugin MIDI in 1" as an option in Cubase.  It is there when I assign all my other tracks that were originally Vienna instruments to the VEPRo instance but it doesn't show up in the same menu as an option for my Kontakt instrument.  The only options I see are Vienna Ensemble Pro, Vienna Ensemble Pro x64 etc.I have followed all the manual instructions and also followed the instructions in this thread.  It seems like I'm following the right steps but the option just isn't there.

    Thanks,

    Becky
