  • MIR and the real World...

I use MIR with the standard package and the Studio package. My question, how did you set the room-fine-tunings? Is the reverb-time (ca. 2 seconds) the original time with ore without audience? Is the reverb/dry-mix (50% the nature-mix in the hall or should we reduce it? Which studio du you use for Movie-Score? Teldex? What is the perfect setting for moviescore?

  • Welcome Michael,

While the default wet/dry ratio can be seen as good starting point, it is definitely not what the microphone would pick up inside a chosen Venue in reailty - this would be quite a bit wetter than that. You wouldn't hear much of the direct signal from an instrument that's 15 or 20 meters away from you in a highly reverberant space.

That's why you will always have some close microphones (a.k.a. spot mics) mixed in when recording an actual orchestral recording. This is exactly what MIR Pro emulates by using the (readily positioned) input signal as "spot mic" and the response of the room to it as the "main mic".

Of course all impulse responses were recorded without audience (... we will gladly do our recordings _with_ audience as soon as we have found about thousand people who are willing to sit completely quiet for 24 and more hours, while listening to loud sine sweeps over and over again ;-D ...).

The reverb time depends a lot on the chosen Venue, and you can shorten it (by means of the Reverb Time Scaling feature) or enhance it (by using an additional instance of MIRacle) according to your taste and needs.

Teldex Berlin is a perfect choice for modern movie scores with huge arrangements, as well as ORF Grosser Sendesaal. Neuer Saal of the Vienna Konzerthaus will work great for smaller setups, as well as ORF Studio 3. - OTOH, many of the more "classical" scores will really flourish in the Great Hall (Grosser Saal) of the Vienna Konzerthaus.

BTW: Don't forget that MIR Pro's dedicated Room EQ is a perfect tool for additional shaping of the room, notwithstanding its size and reverb time.

    HTH,
