What to save, where and when? Metaframes, preserve, plug-in, project?

Hi, I'm fairly new to VE Pro 5 although I have been using VI Special Edition with Logic 9 for a while. There seems to be too many choices when it comes to saving my setup and I'm not sure what to save and where. I have been building a template using a Mac Pro with one instance of VE and a Macbook Pro with 2 more instances. The Mac Pro (local host) instance has my VSL SE instruments loaded and the MBP has one instance Cinematic Strings and another instance with Project Sam instruments. I can save the Logic song file, the Logic template. I can name and save in the AU plug-in window, preserve each instance and save the metaframe. I am confused because I'm sure some saving procedures are made unnecessary by other procedures. Also, and this is the most crucial thing, After setting up the VSL SE controller assignments exactly how I want and with the sliders in a good starting point, eg attack and release, and after saving everything I can, when I reload the template, the release slider has gone back to 0. Any advice would be great. Thanks
