  • Cannot Find Bassoon Sustain Samples

    Hello,

I have the standard libraries for woodwinds I and II as part of the Symphonic Cube, and am trying to orchestrate parts for the bassoon ensemble. I noticed that the ensemble did not have any sustain patches, and figured that the solo bassoon might have some instead, but that does not either. I have just checked this against the 'sample content' list in the products area for woodwinds I, which lists sustained samples as part of the standard libraries for both solo bassoon and bassoon ensemble.

I am using the standard version of VI, looking in the patch tab under B - Woodwind Patches/Bassoon/01 SHORT + LONG NOTES, but can only see BA_staccato and BA_portato_short. Are the sustained patches located somewhere else for the bassoons? Any thoughts on what I might be doing wrong?

    Many thanks.

  •  Hi Pyre,

I guess you've installed the content with our former DVD collections (and not download or hardrive based)?

There was an assignement error with the Bassoon ensembles on the DVD colection content. Therefor the sustains were labeled as extended content. Our Library updates solve this problem, you can find the updates here:

  • Hi Herb,

Thanks for your reply, I've had to wait until this weekend to try it out. I have updated all the instrument libraries with the files from the website as suggested, but the patch list still only shows staccato and portato short for the solo bassoon and the bassoon ensemble. I have tried closing the program and restarting the computer, but this has not made a difference. Any thoughts on where I might be going wrong?

    Many thanks,

    Pyre

  •  Just tested everything from scratch.

i installed the original DVD Libraries.

As expected the sustain patch of Bassoons is not visible.

Than I downloaded the Library Update File from our User Area.

Checked that no Vienna Instrument software is running anywhere. Opened Directory Manager. Checked if the "Woodwinds I" content is listed.

Dragged the Update File on the Directory Manager.

I got the message that the update "11_Woodwinds-LibUpdate_2011-12-10" will be applied.

When the update was done I got the next infothat 300 files have been updated.

If you don't see this message no update ha been applied!

I opened the Vienna Instruments Player and the sustain patch "11 BA-3_sus" is now listed in the Bassoons - a3 section inside the "SHORT + LONG NOTES" folder. (and also the sustains for Solo Bassoon are visible)

I any case please check, if you have installed actual versions of  eLicneser and Vienna Instrumenst software before running the update file.

  • Hi Herb,

Sorry, I've followed the instructions exactly as you say, and received the message that 300 files have been updated. But when I open Vienna Instruments I still did not have the sustains in the SHORT + LONG NOTES folder for bassoon or bassoon ensemble.

After the message that "11_Woodwinds-LibUpdate... will be applied," there was a notification saying that only the active content will be updated, saying please make sure the relevant libraries are added. Is this normal? I checked, and both bassoon virtual instruments are listed in the directory manager.

I'm not quite sure what I'm still doing wrong...

Many thanks for all your help.

  •  Sorry that you couldn't solve it.

Maybe the problem is related to a kind of data storage file called "vicache.bin" which you can find on your system drive.

(on windows 7 it's usually placed in "Users / your user name / AppData / Roaming / VSL / Vienna Instruments")

I've asked our developers to jump in, so they will probably confirm that you can delete this file.

But without any knowledge about your system (OS, Vienna Instruments version etc.) they can't give exact instructions.

So please post your specs here or write to our support adress.

Here are some instructions to this most effectively.

  • Hello,

Yes, under certain circumstances it may help to delete this file. Please indicate which platform/operating system is running on the affected computer.

On Windows the file is located as Herb indicated above, additionally also directories such as Vienna Instruments Pro and viprocache.bin could be present. On Mac the locations are ~/Library/Application Support/Vienna Instruments and Vienna Instruments Pro (relative to the user's home directly)

    Thanks,

    George.

  • Herb and George, thanks very much for your help with this.

I have looked in Users/my user name, but cannot see the app data file. I have tried using the search system to find App Data, or Roaming, or vicache, but none are coming up with any results. I have posted my PC details in the signature as requested, but am not quite sure how to proceed from here.

    Many thanks,

    Pyre

  • Hello,

AppData folder is hidden, so it will only respond when typing it in the explorer window. Please try typing the following in the explorer path line:

    C:\Users\<UserName>\AppData\Roaming\VSL

    (With substuting <UserName>)

    Thanks,

    George.

  • Hi George,

Thanks, I've typed that in as instructed and found the AppData folder, which led to Roaming\VSL\Vienna Instruments. In there I found vicache.bin, which I deleted, then re-applied the library update. However, there are still no bassoon sustain samples listed...

Sorry to be such a pain!

    Hello Pyre,

Please download and install the latest update to the Vienna Instruments software 5.3 build 11859 from your User Area , as well as the newest eLCC - does that make a difference?

If it does not, I´d suggest we continue to troubleshoot via email - - I am positive we will find a solution to your problem!
