  • A short film using the Beethoven Allegretto (and my own music)

I've scored a bunch of 48 Hour Film Projects, usually writing all the music for a short film in a day and a half.  The Beethoven piece (100% VSL) was something I had started before the competition weekend but hadn't polished yet.  I refined it a little for this version of the film but I know it needs a lot more work. I would be interested in feedback as to what needs improvement most -- dynamics?  mix?  I need to tweak some of the articulations to fit the parts better.  Also I used legato cello where it probably should be a section (?).

The rest of the score was written and recorded during the competition weekend. Click on "show more" on YouTube for details.

  • I liked the music, there was nothing noticeably wrong about it. I don't think the person who mixed it all did so well at blending it in with the film. And part of this might be because the quality of the sound in the film was much lower than the quality of the music. The only way I can think of to correct that is to make the music sound like it's actually playing in the kitchen (Altiverb for example might have been helpful there) and then when she travels out of the kitchen it can subtly fade into the full sound of the music. But that's a minor detail and it looks like you opted for full-quality music the whole way through, which I can also understand. One other thing that was a bit odd for me was the actress's reaction all the way at the end. Her exclamation seems easygoing which makes it almost comical, where judging by the music it seems like it shouldn't be comical at all. I'm ready to bet that was the director's decision, so I'm not faulting the music. It's just a bit mismatched in my opinion. Overall, I think you did a great job and I never found myself faulting the music for anything. If you were in charge of all the sounds, then hopefully my outsider's opinion can be helpful to you. Thanks for sharing this!

Thanks for your analysis and support!  A director friend of mine also suggested making the music sound more diegetic in the kitchen. In other words making it sound like it's coming out of small speakers on a counter in a kitchen.  I like your idea of bringing it up to full quality when she goes for her bath. That would make for a more dramatic effect when the music ends and we see the shots of the empty house before the guy arrives.

BTW, I'm not the official sound mixer for this project just trying a few things to see what works best.
