  • [SOLVED] Why am I getting playback latency?

I'm running a project in Cubase 6.0.7 (32-bit). I have Vienna Ensemble Pro 5 running on a networked PC. I'm sending four audio streams to one 64-bit instance. When the audio comes back, it has a latency, which is becoming obvious as I place a second or third plugin on each channel in Vienna Ensemble. Why is the latency not being compensated for?

  • The "Plugin latency compensation (samples)" figure in the bottom right of VE Pro is zero. But "Enable plugin latency compensation" is enabled in the settings.

  • Perhaps the plugin(s) you're using inside VE Pro 5 do not report their latency properly. Which plugin is causing latency that does not get compensated?

  • When I noticed this most prominently I was using three Voxengo plugins on one channel (a drum bus) - Soniformer, HarmoniEQ and Elephant. But the same arrangement in a channel in Cubase has no issues.

  • Should that number at the bottom right of the window show something other than zero? It doesn't change for Native Instruments Guitar Rig either, or any of the factory Steinberg plugins.

  • It definitely should, unless you have Plugin Latency Compensation disabled in the VE Pro preferences.

  • As per above, this is enabled in the preferences. Any other reason it might not be working? I can send a couple of screenshots to show you. Audio is at 88.2kHz 24-bit, OS is Windows 7 Pro (64-bit).

  • Ah, I updated to the latest version of VE Pro 5 and now it's reporting a solid 5039 samples of delay compensation and the latency sounds like its gone. I should have checked that first thing - my bad!

  • I am running the latest version on VEP and Digital Performer 8 in 64bit, and am using VEP to run three instantiations of MOTUs MX4 VI.

I too have latency compensation enabled, but am also seeing "0" as the latency compansation number.

MX4 is playing three different tempo locked arpeggiators, and they are all running 66 ticks late. When I print them to  audio and move the audio back 66 ticks, they all are locked to the tempo.

    Any suggestions?

  • I think I've figured this out. I changed the buffer setting on the Server Interface dialogue to "none" and that fixed it. I do have 28 GB RAM, it's not an issue right now.

Perhaps I haven't noticed the latency before, because I rarely use this particular 32 bit plug-in (MOTU's MX4) as a tempo synched arpeggiator.
