  • ordering new slave computer - help needed

Which is more important for big orchestral rigs, more cores or faster CPU speed? We have a choice between 12 core 2.4gHz or 6 core @ 3.33ghz. Thanks for your input!

  • Unfortunately, the best answer is "get both".  The number of cores are important when it comes to things like MIR Pro, and running lots of effects.  A faster CPU speed becomes very important for streaming larger number of samples.  Note that if you can possibly budget for a few SSDs that would also help with the sample streaming, as you can set lower buffers for the VSL samples, and use less RAM.

What exactly are you looking at, and what exactly will you be doing?  Will you be using MIR Pro, or just VE/VI Pro?  Every user is different, and depending on workflow, answers will likely be different.

  • Hello, Thanks for your input! We currently are running macpro 3.33 6core host mac, with an older macpro 2.66 x2core slave. We are wishing to replace that slave or simply add another macpro slave to the other two. We do not use MIR but only VEPro5. And currently we do indeed use 6 SSDs for the majority of the samples used. Mainly running Kontakt5 for all our orch libs with other VI's like Omnisphere, and Engine on occasion. Our regular orch template is 100+ trks.

  • Normally you use the faster Macpro + ssd for VSL and the slowest one for the DAW as you do not need much power just sending midi to the slave
