I'd like to share the information about the forthcoming second International Film Music Competition -- I'm one of the organisers...

Participants are invited to score a 5-minute short film for a 44-piece orchestra (big band with strings). The five best compositions will be world-premiered by the Zurich Jazz Orchestra and the Zurich Chamber Orchestra under the musical direction of André Bellmont in a film music concert on 27 September 2013 in Zurich. On the same evening, the winner will be chosen by an international jury and awarded the Golden Eye “Best International Film Music” endowed with CHF 10 000.

The terms and conditions of the competition and the film to be scored can be downloaded on the competition website:

  • Thank you very much for this....

  • What insturments are considered part of a "Big Band"?  I don't see a list on the site.

Dorico, Notion, Sibelius, StudioOne, Cubase, Staffpad VE Pro, Synchon, VI, Kontakt Win11 x64, 64GB RAM, Focusrite Scarlett 18i20, August Forster 190
  • You can download the Terms and Conditions on the website, they contain the detailed instrumentation.

  • All the instruments included in terms must be used? For example if I dont want to use guitar, can I skip it in arrangement? Thank you

  • You don't have to use all the instruments, but the composition should remain in an orchestral context...

  • If you'd mentioned in your first post that people have to be 40 years old or younger, I would have saved myself a lot of time dowloading and looking!

  • Sorry about that – I wanted to make the post as short as possible...

  • Open to all style of music ?

  • Yes, if it's playable by a big band plus strings...

    Hello Bill,

As has been pointed out here before, only young composers need help.   Old Composers are already successful and need no contests or assistance, ever.   Unless they are not already successful, in which case they need to go jump in a lake.

    Sincerely Yours in the water,

    Bill

  • I strongly advocated the abolition of the age limit (it was 35 last year). Alas, all I could achieve was that the age limit was raised to 40...

    Cheers
Pitt (about to jump into the lake)

  • Considering the sensibilities and musical abilities of most people today, composition competitions should have a 40-year-old limit. Downwards!!

P.S.: Link to the winning piece from 1st competition?

Thanks for preventing me from jumping into the lake – I am WAY over 40...

It seems that the winner of the 2012 competition hasn't put his music on the net... but you can find the music of other nominees:

    AnĹľe Rozman

    Jan Glembotzki

    Adrian Diery (excerpt at 0:45)

(I have to admit that all these composers are WAY under 40...!)

    Cheers

    Pitt

  • Thanks for the links. By far the best is the last one (even though he only allows snippets of it on his reel). He was the only one to have created a particular sound for that movie, thus emphasizing the singularity of that setting.

  • Ageism is rampant in the music competition and grants world. Maybe someday this will be recognized for what it is: discrimination. I'm all for providing resources for young composers and musicians, but what about the growing number of creative people who are over 40 and just now able to devote themselves to their art and are essentially in the early stages of their music careers? Why not categorize by experience instead of age?

  • Robert, congratulations on beating me to writing the Odysseus ballet. I am in the process of negotiating just that with some company here - I'll still do it if I get the go-ahead of course, since it is an incredible subject.

The last track is my favourite.

  • Hello everyone It's a pity, for me, that there is no earlier than 1973 year of birth limitation. I am a little older, but in music area, especially with composition, I'm fresh because I've started learning it about two years ago and I'm a self-taught person btw. Sorry for my bad English. Cheers Jerry

Jerry, don't take this the wrong way, but had there been no age limitation, do you think you're ready for something like this, I mean having composed music for about two years, and being self-taught? Or do you mean there should be no age limit, for then in ten years you feel you would have a decent shot at winning this thing?

  • My point was - even older guys, like me, could have the same or even shorter experience than their younger competitors. And not age or stage should be the winning factor but the piece or art, or shit, ;) itself. I presume you had to have some factor which will exclude old, well known and very experienced professional composers for giving a shot to those with not so long experience which can bring some fresh blood to music veins. Well I get it but I think the age is not that criterion. I also understand that founder can settle whatever conditions he likes. Answering to your question if I think I can to compete with older in craft (than me) guys, I say - why not? And what do I have to loose - a fee? Cheers Jerry Ps. Sorry again for mistakes in my post. With English I'm also self-taught. :) J.
