  • 'Septet' for assorted solo instruments from SE Vol 1.

I wrote this little piece to experiment with small ensembles using Special Edition Vol 1. It was sequenced in Logic 9 where I added the panning and reverb. The ensemble is:----------------------- Flute- Clarinet- Bassoon- Trombone- Violin- Viola- Bass- --------------------------

someone mind letting me know how to format a post with links and paragraphs as I've had to improvise to make this readable ???

  • Very nice MDT.  Nicely orchestrated too.

Do you find yourself putting a bunch of hidden keyswitches in your score?

  • Thanks winknotes, All the parts have numerous key switches and controller info. I originally wrote the score in Finale but then sequenced it (played each part from scratch) in Logic. The video looks like a Finale playback but I actually dubbed the audio mix on afterwards.

    Crafty! 😉

  • very clever.  I've been toying with the idea of presenting my music that way.  Of course it gets difficult to do if the orchestration is large so I haven't quite worked out those details.

At any rate I always appreciate seeing a score.  It makes giving feedback more meaningful in my opinion if the composer is interested in such feedback.  Are you open to some notational suggestions/critiques?

  •  This is a good idea to show the score during playback for youtube if you don't have a video, since youtube is so much in demand.  It is a problem as winknotes said if the score is huge.  Maybe in that case you can focus on the section that is playing the main part.  I may try that too.  Then your score view will become like a multi-camera video of an orchestra, but for composers instead of normal people.

  • @winknotes-- I am open to any comments or critiques but don't take the written score too seriously as I was very lax with the detail. I really only do the video with a score to give the listener something meaningful to look at.--- I have another video on my youtube channel which shows the key edit window of my DAW where I colour coded the different instruments.--- @ William,--- Yes a large score would be very tricky and quite fiddly to do I think. Maybe the video could follow the parts that you might look at if you were reading the score.------------------------PS @ winknotes,--How do you get paragraph in your posts. Mine come with the text all in one block. This is a very annoying forum to post in, no html, links etc.

  •  At the top of the page, click on Profile, Community tab, and chang contet editor to Enhanced.

Why it's not set that way by default is a mystery to me!

BTW, what did you use to capture the video?

Dorico, Notion, Sibelius, StudioOne, Cubase, Staffpad VE Pro, Synchon, VI, Kontakt Win11 x64, 64GB RAM, Focusrite Scarlett 18i20, August Forster 190
  • No idea why this can't be the default value, sorry. :-/

    Ah that's much better[:)]

    Thanks Bill and Dietz,

Bill, I used a program called Screenflow but I think it may be Mac only.

The topic of playback and score came up on another forum I frequent and one of the members uses what is now called Sony Movie Studio Platinum. He can do panning with it which I thought was interesting. His example was a live recording married with a video of his score which is piano (orchestra reduction) and solo instrument I believe but it made me think one could pan to foreground parts in an orchestra score....without making the viewer/listener dizzy.

  • The movie looks good but the musical composition is even better! Wow, hats off to the composer!
