  • Vienna Library/Instruments and Wind Controllers

Hello all, I am pretty new to this forum, and it's some time I am looking forward to buy a VSL product, probably I will start with a Vienna Special edition Bundle... What I am wondering about, and found no clue, is the possibility to use the Vienna Instruments samples under the control of a MIDI Wind controller ( I own an Akai EWI )... I am already doing this 'fixing' some samples of woodwinds/brasses I have from other libraries under Kontakt to be responding to breath CC's and I get very nice results... I am wondering if anyone has ever done this with VSL instruments/libraries, and what the results were, or even if this option is already provided by any of the VSL instrument SW's... Thanks for any reply Regards... Alex

  • I know at least one of Vienna's staff uses a breath controller with a keyboard. (I think it's Dietz). I'm sure he will chime in soon!

  • In the Vienna Instrument's player there are settings for wind controller (CC2).

    Hi everbody,

Both Christian Kardeis and me are using Breath Controllers, usually the BC-3A from Yamaha, although I have now found a new Breath Controller that plugs in via USB from a small company from TEC. This way I don´t need a Breath Control Input on any keyboard, which makes it easy to use on the road - PLUS Yamaha stopped the production of the BC-3A around a year ago.

We´re both using CC2 to control Velocity Xfade, sometimes it also makes sense to assign Expression (with a different curve) to the same CC2 (gives you even more control over the dynamic range).

However, we´re not using an AKAI EWI, but I´ve seen a few guys having a great time with Vienna Instruments and the EWI.

    Best,

    Paul

  • Hello,

Playing a wind instrument works well with the AKAI EWI, but I find it not handy as controller in combination with i.e. keyboard sinxe it requires 2 hands to use.

  • Just remember that a wind controller and a breath controller are two different things.

  • Thanks guys for the informations... Of course, I am speaking of a Wind Controller, not a Breath controller... I am a pianist, but I love to play wind parts the more likely using the original fingering of the wind instruments... This enhances a lot the instrument expression and dynamics, expecially using XFading for continuous control of the sound generator, and adding a little of frequency enhancing/filtering, both tied to the realtime breath CC... And also the articulations are far more real, and of course, with errors...he..he... For me the important is to understand if the VSL instruments are able to elaborate a continuous flow of sound based on a continuous controller ( CC2 ), so, moving for example thru mixing 2 different samples in realtime, and not just using the inital CC value ( or velocity ) at the start of a note... In KOntakt language this would be to have different layers of sound ( not velocity zones )which are then mixed realtime based on the CC2... Alex

  • Hi Alex, yes the VSL instruments can move between different dynamic layers in real time in response to variations of continuous controller value. In the Vienna Instruments player this feature (known as 'Velocity X-Fade') defaults to CC2 control (it can be changed to another CC number if you wish). Make sure the 'Vel. XF' box in the 'Perform' window is ticked!
