  • CPU usage - Logic vs. ProTools

Hi all - I am considering moving from Logic 9.18 to ProTools 10.3x for my main DAW. I have a pretty extensive orch. template spread across 2 computers (main and slave) which requires 10 instances of VEPro. I have begun to setup my template in ProTools but I noticed immediately that once I load it all up the CPU usage is just about double in PT (according to Activity Monitor in OS X). This is just "idling" ie. not playing any notes.

Is ProTools lame in this area, or is Logic just really efficient?

I have 11 gb of RAM, running OS 10.68

Depends on your point of view but yes, Logic is far more efficient than PT in particular for virtual instruments, and seems to be quite a bit more efficient than the other mac DAWs. PT 11 ships in a few weeks and they claim much improved cpu use, but we'll have to wait and see how it compares to other apps at that point.

  • Just remember PT 11 is also Mountain Lion only and AAX only.

  • Logic + VSL had the same problem a few years ago
