  • Phasing effect and humanize in VIPro

Please forgive me if this is a trivial question... or a question with a trivial answer :) Does the humanize function in VIPro eliminate possible phasing problems when two instances of the same instrument are used? For example if I need 2 Bb Clarinets at times playing the same line I risk running into phasing problems due to the identical samples used. One way to get rid of that is to do the so-called transposition trick but... now if in VIPro I set different humanize values for each clarinet do I eliminate this problem? If so which factor is more important / natural to humanize: delay or pitch? Thanks for your help! Tatiana Gordeeva

  • No it won't get rid of the phasing. I think the best thing to do is use an Ensemble patch instead. The ensemble patches are 3 Clarinets, so if you want to make it sound more like 2, add a bit of solo Clarinet in there as well.

  • Thank you for your reply. I'm surprised. I thought phasing was caused by slight delays between identical samples so I assumed that by using a "humanized" pitch that would be different for each I would solve the problem by changing each waveforms. Obviously I don't understand how the phasing problem originates. Using 3 clarinets + 1 solo to emulate 2 clarinets is even more surprising to me. I will try it. But what to do when there's no ensemble patch to use (apart from the transposition trick or using different libraries)? Thanks again! T.

  • You get phasing in real life between players all the time. it is just considered "good" phasing.

Regarding ensemble patches, these exist for the most used instruments, so with normal usage, you should be OK. The one huge exception is that there is only one each of the solo Strings instruments.
