This is a duplicate post to one in the notation forum but I know there are guys here who don't visit there and this is about a composition performance so forgive the repeat.

I'm continuing my project to create a complete performance of Kaikhosru Sorabji's 2nd Symphony "Jami" using Sibelius and VSL (big collections). It's only n the last year that I've eventually got over the hardware and software issue to be able to start doing it. 24GBs of RAM, SSD drives, 64bit system etc. and for seven months I've been working on the third movement which alone lasts over two hours and requires 120 virtual instruments.

Having completed 72 minutes though I have decided it's not good enough because I'm not good enough at using VSL to its optimum so I am taking a break to learn to improve my skills. However I didn't want to let what I have done go to waste and so have uploaded what I have done so far for anyone who may be interested.

    MP3

    FLAC

If your interest is at all piqued I have a very amateurish blog where I have been charting the progress which you can read here.

This music is extraordinary and unlike anything you will have heard or indeed are ever likely to hear. A virtual performance is almost certainly the only performance anyone will ever hear.

  • Hi Dave and congratulations on your massive project. I did come across Sorabji during my university days - my teacher appreciated him. I would very much prefer to listen to your efforts with the score. Would it be possible for you to put up here, or send me the Sibelius PDF?

    Hi Errikos,

I can't let youhave the score as it's still copyright with the Sorabji Archive for who I am preparing a type set edition. The MS is available as relatively modest PDF from them.

However you can see several example pages here towards the bottom of the page.

  • This is quite a huge project and the music is extremely difficult. He is certainly a bizarre character - some of the rants make him seem like a paranoid.  His attitude reminds me of Harry Partch who thought he was too good for all of Western Music.  I don't know what to think about the music itself but really admire the work you are doing and your dedication.  Good luck on it!

The man is as fascinating as his music and I should pass on that the long awaited magnum opus on his life and work by Professor Marc-André Roberge has been made available online for free. Yes, for free! check it out here.

  • I understand completely Dave, I keep forgot this contemporary of Prokofiev died only 25 years ago... Best of lusk with your courage and progress.

  •  Thanks for this great info and I am definitely going to check it out.  This and the Stephan Fahl work are really great uses of VSL.
