  • Outputs 7-32 Not Working in VEP Surround

Hi, I searched to find an answer on this, but I could not. After using VEP for a couple of years, I finally decided to try the VEP 5.1 version for a 5.1 film score. Pro Tools sees outputs 7-32 coming back from the VEP Surround instances (in sets of 6 channels each) as I'd expect. But when I try to assign them as inputs to 5.1 aux tracks or audio tracks, Pro Tools just keeps the existing non-VEP path assignment. In other words, it ignores the command to reassign. So all I can access is outputs 1-6, which return on the instrument track hosting the interface plugin. I have a few things that need to return independently in 5.1 (virtual instruments and verbs/delays), so I set up two surround instances as a workaround. But it would be great if I could access all the outputs. This issue only happens with the surround instance. All the returns work in the stereo instances. And all the audio inputs work that feed the VEP surround instance via the audio input plugin. Everything else is working perfectly, both on my local host and my network VEP servers. This problem occurs in Pro Tools 10 and 11. I'm on a Mac Pro Westmere 2.4GHz dual 4-core, Mountain Lion 10.8.4, latest versions of everything. If anyone knows of something different I can do, I'd be grateful to hear about it. Thanks, Ben

    Hi Ben,

thanks for your report, and sorry for the late reply. I just tested a similar setup (PT HD Native 10.3.6, OSX 10.8.4), and I wasn't able to select other VE Pro outputs than 1-6 either.

I will make VSL's software engineers aware of the problem. Thanks for your patience!

BTW - for quick replies, it is always a good idea to write a short message to with all necessary details, too.

    Kind regards,

    Hi Ben,

Karel Bassez, the driving force behind VE Pro's development, answered:

Pro Tools has had this problem since forever. Only happens with surround instrument plugins that have multiple output buses from the looks of it. VE Pro is the only plugin I know that supports this. Same issue also happened with the RTAS version and we've made Digidesign aware of it back then too.

In other words: There's nothing we can do about it as long as Avid doesn't fix this bug, sorry to say so. - Just to be sure, I just tested a comparable setup with Nuendo 5.5 as host under OSX 10.8.4, and in that case I'm indeed able to use as many multi-channel returns from VE Pro as I wanted.

    Kind regards,
