  • One SSD internal drive or external USB 2 drive for samples!

    Hi,

I have an Acer 5560 laptop with 8 gigs ram (running Windows 7) but only has usb 2. I want to use VSL SE for large orchestra.

Would I be better off replacing the os drive with an SSD and run everything from it (Sibelius and VSL samples) OR placing the samples on an external SSD drive through USB 2?

    Cheers

    Leif

  • The transfer speed of USB 2.0 will limit the benefits of SSD. Using it internally will give you better performance.

  • it is a non sense to put a SSD on a USB 2 port !

  • Does it make sense to put an external SSD on a USB 3 port?

  • it is much better, but you have to have a Sata III to collect all the gain of your ssd

you have to be very carefull and check the spedd of your USB 3 or you sata III interface because you have fast and slow interfaces !

  • Hi all, I just want to share my experience, I use a MBP(mid 2012 retina 16 GB), for my libraries (DS) I have a Crucial M500 960 GB in an enclosure USB 3 (Icy Box) it changed my life, I don't hesitate anymore to try a preset, matrix, etc. it's so fast loading, and we're musicians NO NOISE... USB 3 is fast, cheap and seems to have be made for our huge libraries. My two cents F.

  • These days, always replace the OS drive with a SSD if you have the funds.

And yes, unless you're pressed for storage space (doesn't seem likely with VSL SE), put the samples on the SSD, too. The days of "needing" a separate drive for OS and samples are over (in practice you might still want to, but for VSL SE it's absolutely not a requirement).

Hard drives can do about 250 to 300 read operations per second. SATA 3 SSDs can do about 90,000. So don't worry, install your samples on an SSD alongside your OS, and be happy.

  • Thanks for the information.  Would you please clarify if my laptop needs to have both USB 3 and SATA III.  If my laptop has only USB 3.0 ports and does not have SATA III can I still get the benefit by connecting an external SATA III SSD via an USB 3 port?

You will gain, but not all the full speed of your ssd

    USB III is 5 gb/s

    SATA III is 6 gb/s

You have to check that you USB 3 to Sata  III adaptor is running at 5 gb/s
