  • Do new versions of VEP still break connections?

    Hi guys,

I'm on 5.1.12195, on 2 Mac Pros, main and slave, with OS 10.8.3. I use DP8.04.

I was thinking about updating VE Pro to the latest version, as I don't want to get too far behind, but there is this issue.. seems like most every time I've updated VE Pro (on both machines, of course), the connections between the plugins in DP and the server on the slave machine gets broken. The plugins still remember the instances and their settings, thank goodness, but must be reconnected to the instances one at a time. This is a big time waster for me, as some of my projects currently in production may have anywhere from 5 to 12 VE Pro plugs instantiated in DP.

Once I connect it all back up and save the document, all is good again- but I have to do that for each VEP plug, for every document I'm working on, and all past projects.

So the question is, if I update now, will I have to go through this yet again (don't have time right now), or is the behavior fixed, OR have I just been missing a step or doing it wrong?

    Thanks!

  • Guess this may have been a dumb question?

.. or it's been answered many times here and I just couldn't find it. Not a problem, I'm just going to stay on the version where I am, it works.

  • I've never seen the behaviour you describe. It sounds as if there is something wrong with your set-up, like not using fixed IP, for example.

Interesting. I've never had it not behave that way, using and updating it for over 3.5 years now.

And, I had no idea that using dynamically allocated IP addresses on my computers would be considered as something wrong with my setup. I restart them everyday, and they get different IP addresses, probably most every time, considering I have a dozen or more devices on the network.. the only time these connections get broken, ever, is when I update the VE Pro software. Hence my query.

Static IP is the way to go for VEP.

  • Hello. Good to see DG still in the forum. (48GB memory? I don't think my brain has that many :) ) I surface about once every four years. My problem is the same symptom listed here [ instances disappear and won't connect properly]. My Master is a PC Windows 7 Pro, Service Pack 1 with Cubase 6 sequencer and LAN to Vista 64 Service Pack 1 PC slave. Had run for several years OK. Dropped out of using them to school myself in composition and theory for two years and came back to not getting VEP Pro 64 or Vienna Ensemble 3 to connect or retain instances properly. The LAN network works fine. The sound system works fine with the Echo Gina 3 card ( I verified the sound settings with Steinberg Yamaha Support tech). I have followed Paul's steps described in a similar forum question , getting the connected local host screen to come up as :Vienna Instrument v4.0 build 4416. The build date is September 2009 12:55 . The following licenses are installed: Vienna Ensemble 3, Vienna Instruments. The right screen in the GUI shows the RED X and empty. The patch assign shows RED X No Patch. I have attempted to load VEPro 4 on the master computer before opening the sequencer...tried after opening the sequencer...tried opening new sequencer projects...tried new instances, and anything I could think of as different sequences of opening. I have done this exercising now for two weeks at least 24 hours per week. In a radical frustrating moment, I forgot to write down all my attempts and actually got an instrument to play in Cubase twice, but lost it when I closed the computer for the day. Obviously, I am a bedroom composer amateur with few computer skills, slow to comprehend and even slower with age. If anyone has a way to try to get the connections talking to each other, please keep it simple - click path, 1,2,3, - that sort of thing - for this old man? Would really appreciate it, tony h

    Hi tony h,

I have checked your registrations, you are using Vienna Ensemble PRO 4. There have been quite a few updates in the last years for all our software products, so the first step is to update:

Unfortunately Vista 64 is not supported anymore, so you might want to stick to the Archive versions of VI and VE PRO 4 or (better) upgrade to Windows 7 on your slave computer.

Then, to be safe that your Vienna Instruments actually SEE the sample content:

Please open the Directory Manager (find it in "Applications" (OS X) or "All Programs" (Win) => then "Vienna Instruments").

Remove all folders - then add all sample content again by drag and drop from your Finder/Explorer.

More information about how the Directory Manager works can be found in this video.

LetĀ“s take it step by step. You can always contact us at with more, questions, details and screenshots.

    Best,

    Paul

  • Hi Paul, glad you could make it to this thread! The original poster (me![:)]) wanted to know if he could safely update the VEP software now, and not worry that all the connections to the plugins are broken..

Is it because I don't run the computers here with static IP addresses?

  • HI Killahurts,

Static IP addresses are always a good idea, especially with bigger setups.

IĀ“m updating VE PRO all the time, with alpha and beta versions, never any troubles with the connections (yes, static IP addresses here).

  • Paul thank you. I'll get to work on it this week. Best, tony h

  • Hi Paul, Here is where I stand with updates at the moment. eLicenser Control Center: 6.5.4.2131 Master \ 6.3.1.1064 Slave. Vienna Instruments : No files available for your registered products in this category. Vienna Ensemble Pro: no files available, etc, . I would need to download the current eLicenser Control Center to a removable drive for the Slave computer. The Slave's CD player will not read my wireless disk to install an internet connection directly. My hesitation in installing Windows 7 is two fold. I will need to update my Master (read new computer) to increase its ram and I would do the same for the Slave at that time. Meanwhile, I want to understand the Directory Manager which I keep and review on my desktop. I am not clear how the Vienna Instrument in the Devices window connects to the VEPros on each computer, nor when to add an instance at the proper time and sequence on each computer. In all of this, I intend to keep clear, simple notes and not settle for anything less than really understanding the processes, not just reading and executing the worded directions. I have watched your overview video many times and still haven't got it. I am unhappily interrupted with family business for the next three days and eager to get back to this undertaking, re-organizing my Directory Manager paths, locating the correct place for viframes, loading all my instrument libraries, and finally storing projects in one place. That's a lot on my plate. So, one step at a time is sound advice. I'll be eager for the next step. Henceforth I will be succinct, Best, tony h

    Hi tony h,

You donĀ“t see any software because you are logging in with your "tony h" account, which you just generated (but it does not contain any registered products).

You have registered your products with a different email address (hint: xx@swbell.net), you will see all downloads as soon as you are logged in with this email address.

Any troubles: Contact us at ! It will probably be easier to discuss this via mail than on the forum anyway.

Please also update your eLCC software on both computers, to be safe. You can always transfer data with a USB stick between computers).

So letĀ“s take it from there (latest software versions installed).

    Best,

    Paul
