  • Making a backup of my Vienna Instruments USB key

I thought I saw a posting about making a backup of the Vienna Instruments Key-as in a copy-

    Can't find the post.

just wondering if making a backup  is possible and how would I go about doing that?

    Thanks

I know some of the software products, like Vienna Suite, you are entitled to three licenses so that you can operate the software on three different machines but, as DG pointed out, you can not make a backup copy so guard that key with your life!!![8o|]

Cause if you loose that key... You're screwed blued and tatooed[:(]

  • This thread has been brought considerably ammount of times.

Imagine if the timespan of the usb dies, then you are majorly screwed.

Since you gone like 5k in libraries and then the usb dies like a year after, that feeling must really be bad and feel that you already lost a life.

There is something you can do which is moving the licensing information to another usb drive from one vienna key to another.

Not to rehash this touchy subject on the forum (I can guess that Dietz is rolling his eyes right now saying, "here we go again") but it's important and something that new users should be fully aware of.

I believe the Vienna keys have a two year warranty so if it dies within those two years you should be covered.  You just have to buy another key before the warranty expires on your current key.

    And/Or... get insurance.

A possible light at the end of the tunnel?

A lot of companies are depositing data on "the cloud,"  where users can access it by being registered and entering a password.  If streaming technology can reach the point to where you can stream samples from the cloud then dongles might be obsolete[8-|]  You could access your sample libraries on the cloud with a password.

It would be nice to have the option of being able to stream your samples from the Vienna Cloud.  The options users have could be limitless, like purchasing only staccato Orchestra Viola samples, for example, instead of having to buy the complete OS 1 standard library.

Have the dongle option still available for those who have unreliable Internet connections, however.  Presently, this is the only solution I see to this on-going dongle dilemma.

  • In case of break-in and theft, I am sure VSL will be understanding, for there will be police reports and on site inquiry (i'm sure the robbers won't just leave with a USB stick - if at all, and leave computers, interfaces, instruments, headphones, and external disks behind...). In case of breakage (they are not too sturdy, perhaps this can be improved), you just send the broken dongle to VSL and they replace it for a nominal fee. Same if the dongle is out of warranty and malfunctions (right?).

So, the only other contingency is loss, which is rather possible when one is on the road a lot. Since insurance companies cover very expensive laptops against loss or theft, I don't see why they cannot extend that to software dongles. However, I don't see how VSL has anything to do with this discussion, as they are not an insurance company. Asking them to allow duplication of their licences (why not triplication or more?), is just naive, if not suspicious.
