  • SE Bosendorfer and full Bosendorfer

I wonder whether anyone could comment on the difference between the Bosendorfer in the Special Edition and the full Bosendorfer - both in terms of sample content and also the sound? I'm at risk of taking advantage of Vienna's current offer  ...[;)]

    Thanks.

  •  The Special Edition Bosendorfer, I can't say anything about it but the Full Bosendorfer is great, the sound is very inspiring, you have 2 microphone positions, Close and Distant.. In terms of samples, it has more samples than Special Bosendorfer. The close and distant mic offers the same ammount of samples together, so you have a soft pedal and a sustain pedal. You also have a resources, in this case what I love the most is the key stroking which I felt in love with. :)

Althought, if you want an even better piano, just go for the Vienna Imperial (595€). It is indeed a powerful piano, and the best sounding Piano in VSL.

  • Once you play the Imperial, you won't want to play any other sampled piano.

Large Vienna Library all on SSD, Protools/Carbon on M1 MacBook Pro, OSX Monterey 12.7, Steinway D, Rhodes Mk8-FX, Osmose, Moog One, Trigon 6-DT, OB-X8, Prophet 10 rev4, OB-6-DT, Kawai VPC-1
  • The Imperial is for me at present a counsel of perfection - meaning I can't afford it. Am I right in thinking the full Bosendorfer's features are fully compatible with Sibelius 7? For example, is it clear how one would switch between the two mike positions?

  • Oceanview: You can change the mic positions but it will sound unreal. The mic positions just give you the position from where it is standing. In this case you have one that is close (Close to the Piano) and one that is distant (Distant from the piano).

I believe the main difference between the two are the velocity layers.  The Bos in SE only has three layers?  The full library OTHO has eight layers I think.

The SE Bos is sampled at whole tone while the full library is sampled at half tone.  For piano, this doesn't make that much of a difference in sound quality.

And the two mic positions as mentioned before.

I tickle the ivories on occasion and can afford the Imperial but 100 velocity layers per key is a little overkill for my needs[:O]

However, I wish Vienna would record at least four more layers for the Bos full library and offer it as an upgrade for a $100 or so[:D]  I believe the industry standard is twelve layers with some going up to fifteen or eighteen.

You load them up as different matrixes or presets within VI or VE.  I don't have Sibelius but it shouldn't matter because it's done within the Vienna host.  Of course, you could create your own matrixes using both mic positions but why THE HELL would you do that[:^)]

  • I'm afraid you misunderstand me. By 'switch between' I did not mean inside or during a single piece or composition. I meant, how does one have that control generally to choose? If it is down to the presets / matrices taking care of it then that's fine and clear.
