  • dimension strings with real combo

    Hello community.

Here is an orchestral arrangement sustaining my new group.

Soprano sax, piano, solo cello and voices are real.

Dimension violins and cellos, solo alto violins, celesta, clarinet, bass clarinet, flugelhorn, horn, tenor trombone are VSL.

Mixed with MIR Vienna Grosser Saal (for the orchestra) and Maria Strassengel (for the voices).

    Critics welcome.

  • That sounds excellent Stephane.  Amazing to hear how well the live instruments blend with the sampled.  The music itself is very good - has a melancholy harmonically interesting quality to it.  I like that atonal celesta arpeggio. Is this composed for a film ?  Anyway it is very good to hear this also as an example of how perfectly the live and samples can blend within MIR.

  • Thanks for your comment, William.

The combo instruments did receive each a particular treatment (like a slow ping pong delay on the sax, in order to make it bigger than real, an algorythmic reverb on the piano to give some body to the take which was miked from very close to the soundboard, and a little exciter to the solo cello), but then their stereo bus was sent to the MIR Grosser Saal with just enough wet to get the feeling that the instruments are in the same space than the orchestra.

As for the voices, to me, and for now, nothing beats the Maria Strassengel space, even very close to the mic flower and with minimal wet.  Such a clarity and dimensional feel...

Yet, for the orchestra, I don't seem to be able to reach the miraculous clarity and realness of the VSL demos (like, among the others, the last Sage demo of Guy Bacos (my god, how good !)).  I did try different mic setups, but no way, I don't get THAT liveliness.  Could it be due to the sound card ?  I use a M-Audio Fast Track Ultra.  Maybe I should ask an Apogee to Santa Klaus.  But after all, with the orchestra, we stay in digital domain all the way to the master wav file, not ?

No, this piece is not for film music.  I would really like to do film music, but how do you get in ?  This is just a demo intended to promote my new group, searching for gigs (we have a version without orchestra for the smaller venues...) :)

Thanks again for your good words.

    Stephane.
