  • VEP PRO 5 Can't make it work

Wow! I tried looking at the videos on this but because they are at 360p I went blind instead. Trying to make this work with Kontakt and in Logic Pro 9 to me is impossible with the routing. I have no clue after reading and watching the videos how to get this to work - or even if I want it to work. I can't see any further use for it as it's way to convoluted to me.

Someone needs to make some videos that makes sense and can be followed slowly and easily.

  • Paul, where did you get to when you lost the plot? It would help me try to explain it, if I knew exactly where the stumbling block was. I have Kontakt running very smoothly and easily in VEP, so it can't be that difficult. [:$]

  • What seems to be an issue with Logic Daryl, is one seems to have to go into the Environment window to set things up. This is not apparent from videos and as I can't stand reading manuals, it's definitely difficult to work it out. I have watched 3rd party videos on Youtube that are available and they are basically useless. What I want to do is set up 16 channels of Kontakt per instance of VEP 5. I get as far as getting one instrument through one channel and the second I try the next channel I get nothing and so on. I have tried all the setting up of 1-2 3-4 5-6 7-8 etc but cannot seem to understand what is wrong.

If you are crap at technology like I am, then you need very easy to understand instructions on a one by one basis to get through the setup. Logic is a very quirky system and as you use use Nuendo, I can see this as a waste of your valuable time. But thanks Daryl as usual. I will somehow try and work it out before the trial period ends. Paul.

  • AFAIK the environment thing is only necessary if you want to use the multiport layer. From what you've previously said, you don't have a huge template to deal with, so this should not be necessary for you.

You can use a different isntance of Kontakt for each channel and that will work. You could also use just one instance of Kontkat, but that is more complicated if you want multiple outputs.

When I'm in the studio tomorrow, I'll take a screenshot to show you what the settings should look like for one instance per MIDI channel.

  • Very kind of you Daryl.

When you say one Kontakt instance per track (channel)? - how would that be helpful? I can use one instance of Kontakt per track in Logic by itself. Would using VEP Pro 5 make a big difference?

  • Hang on a second. Before I delve into this, are you saying that you are not wanting to use the Network capabilty of VEP?

  • Here are two screenshots that might help you:

This one shows the MIDI and audio input routing:

  • Daryl many thanks indeed.

That's a good question and I was on the phone to my music publisher when I spotted your message come up. So I asked if I should bother to link two computers together (which was part of the plan) - and yes I could and would be interested in doing that. Even though as you say I don't have anything like big templates. I thought I should at least give it a go.

The Kontakt screenshots. Yes I go into the Batch thing and do all of that.

  • OK, so you'll see from the screenshots that I have two MIDI inputs (coming from seperate MIDI channels 1& 2) routed to one instance of Kontakt with two seperate outputs.

At the moment both outputs are routed to the same master output in VEP, but it would be possible to use seprate outputs from VEP as well (creating extra input auxes in Logic).

Where does it not work for you now?

We can discuss the Network thing when the rest is working for you.

  • Daryl thanks.

I am downloading tracks at the moment, but the second I finsih I will get Logic up and try to get your initial suggestion first and then come back asap. Paul

  • OK thanks for the try Daryl but I can't make head nor tail out of it and have deleted the program from the hard drive. I don't think I even need it. Just one computer should be sufficient for what I do.

  • I tried to download the demo again but it came up saying I had too many demo lisences. That is because the second time I tried it, it didn't work.

So that just saved me £200. I'll buy another library instead from somewhere.

Dear PaulR, after 2000+ messages in these forums you should actually know that VSL supporters usually are able to solve problems like yours, if asked politely. ->

  • I think in my discussion here with Daryl has been perfectly polite.

What someone needs to do is make a video for dummies is:-

    (a) MINIMUM 760p RESOLUTION.

    (b) One where it starts from the beginning on ONE computer .

    (c) then one for usage with 2 computers.

    (d) A video that shows it all layed out very in very easy to understand language and how to set it up step by step

    (e) A video that is made for people that have no experience of DAWs or anything else.

This almost certainly is going to be impossible just like everything else in the music tech business. Never seen a video yet that explained anything satisfactorily.
