  • Dimension Strings Factory Patches and Player Numbers

    Hello!

I've been building my custom patches for DS, and I was wondering why the 1st and 2nd desks of Violins have players 1-3 and 2-4 respectively, while 3rd and 4th desks have 5-6 and 7-8, instead of the more sequential 1-2, 3-4, 5-6, 7-8. I'm doing mostly desk patches myself, should I follow this numbering? Does this somehow conform with the original seating used in the recording sessions?

Same question for the celli of course, since they are 1-3, 2-4, 5-6 in the factory patches for desks.

  • Interesting point.

I spent some time listening carefully to every musician in dimension violins and cellos, and I have the feeling that they have been chosen on purpose for their own different qualities : one is average, one has more precise articulation, one has more round sound, one looks like he is asleep, one exagerates dynamics, etc. and indeed, all together, they sound absolutely great.  It is just not evident for me what is the benefit of them playing together.  I would understand if they played musical phrases, then of course some mutual accordance would happen intuitively; but when playing single notes ?

I wonder if it has something to do with simplifying some panning arrangements. If 3 is seated behind 1, they could be realistically panned to the same space, perhaps?

  • I was thinking something along those lines but the rest of the violins are grouped as 5-6 and 7-8..

On the other hand, I did a desk setup with violins 1-2 and everything sounds ok. It would be good to have some guidelines about making custom patches for DS, though.
