Greetings all,

I am having a problem with the sustains in the solo viola holding out in Sibelius. Also, that instrument doesn't seem to be switching to legato for the slur notation. What could the problem be? Thanks.

Also this seems to happen right after a double stop. Not sure if that makes any difference?

How long is the note you are holding? Does the note just run out, or does it cut off prematurely?

The note is held until the patch switches to legato, way past the end of the measure. It's as if note off messages are not being sent at all. I wish someone could help me with this. I need to deliver a midi version and parts by the weekend.

OK, you didn't really answer my question. However, I'm guessing that you are expecting the note to be looped, but AFAIK the notes for Solo Strings are not looped, so you'll need to re-trigger the note to get the correct length.

I think you are misunderstanding me, when I playback in Sibelius for some reason the viola sustains are holding over indefinitely onto the next measure/s. So what im hearing, say if I have C, D and Eb playing in three consecutive measures all the notes stack up to form a chord. This goes on until I hit stop. So the piece starts sounding like Ligeti!! Haha, does this make sense. The sustains won't turn off!!

Do you have a pedal mark somewhere close to these bars?

How would I see if there are pedal marks? Would a sustain pedal effect the string patch even?

Unless you have hidden it, you should see it in the score. It would only affect the Strings if it was attached to the same stave.

I would usggest that you play that section of the score back with the VI GUI open, and see if you can spot what's going on.

Fariling that, either send the score to or the Sibelius support team.

How do I show hidden messages again? I may have wrote Sustain now that I think of it trying to select sustain patch and not pedal sustains. I hope this is it! Thank you so much for your help anyway! So if I select a measure, I can select 'show' under notes? Is that how I do it?

View/Hidden Objects

Yes, if you have written sustain, try to remove that and see what happens.

There are no hidden objects this is driving me crazy!!! I wish Andi would chime in here. It's happening when I'm switching from an harmonic to a double stop. Ugh, so frustrating. There is also a clef change.

Ok I exported the Midi file and as you thought there is a pedal sustain midi message, but I don't see it in the score. Where is it coming from?

Glad that you now have it sorted out. Also glad to hear that it was user error and not something more serious.  Wink
