  • Assigning midi channels to a multi channel plugin in VEpro 5

    Hi,

If this is already been answerd, i'm sorry, but i couldn't find it.

If you load a multichannel plugin like EW-Play you can assign a midi port and channel and add the extra audio output-channels with the + in the mixer. but in the appearing sub-channels there is no possibility to assign a dedicated midi-channel. How can you approach them separately with your DAW?

    Thanks.

    Geert.

  • Hi Geert, as far as I know the MIDI channel assignment is done in Play's interface - having loaded multiple instruments into Play, you click on each of their names and assign them different MIDI channels on the GUI. Same approach with Kontakt, except in Kontakt each loaded instrument has its own interface.

  • ehm, that was not really my question....

you can not use the individual channels in Play you need to set it to Omni to get it working.... the individual channel is assigned in VE itself on the channel.... and when you create separate audio-ouputs with the + there is no oppertunity to assign a midi channel to that sub-oudio-output

  • Unfortunately your question is not clear. I don't know what you mean by assigning a MIDI channel to an audio output. Do you mean that you have various outputs within PLAY that you want to route separately out of VEP?

  • Here you can see in the selected "Percussionplay" channel that i created 4 extra sub outputs with the + on the channel  (percssnply2/3/4/5)

The difference between the main and sub channels is that is has a MIDI input whwere the subs dont

So you can route timpany to output 1/2, cymbal to 3/4, gong to 5/6 in the Play interface, but there is no way to individually trigger them, because the whole play plugin only gets 1 MIDI channel assigned from VE5, the sub-outputs are not having the same MIDI channel select option.

  • oh, i added a screenshot which i dont see at the moment

  • >You can not use the individual channels in Play you need to set it to Omni to get it working....

I don't have VE Pro5, but I can load multiple instruments into Play in VEPro 4 and assign them different audio outputs and different MIDI channels. Setting any of the instruments' MIDI channels to Omni means it will play all the other instruments' parts.

Maybe I've misunderstood the issue, but a simple test would be to load timpani, cymbal and gong into one instance of Play in VE Pro5, set them to MIDI channels 1, 2 and 3 respectively in the Play GUI (you know how to do that, right?) and then play them individually by selecting the appropriate MIDI transmit channel on your master keyboard.

  • I am talking the whole time about Play from within VE5... i know that outside you can route midi channels, but inside VE5 you can only assign one channel to one instrument..... and it would be more handy if the separate outputs of an instrument plugin could recieve different midi channels so it would become multi timbral again.

  • I can't hep you with PLAY, because I no longer have it. However, with Kontakt I can easily assign multiple MIDI channels to one instance so I would suggest that you contact the Soundsonline support team, as it seems to be a PLAY specific problem.

  • how can u apply multiple channenls IN VE5 to kontakt, because kontakt only gets assigned one channel in VE5?

  • There's no problem assigning multiple channels to one instance of Play; not sure where you're having trouble. You select the Port and Channel on the lefthand pane. By default they are both set to "All".

On the other hand, using individual instance for each channel is what many prefer.

  • once more.... i'm taking about an instance WITHIN VE5 not just in the DAW

and my question is "why is it possible to have multiple audio channel extensions when you use a multi timbral plugin in VE5 but why is it not possible to give them a dedicated MIDI channel, because only the main channel you can set to a port and channel nr."

And if you assign  a midi port and channel to a plugin, it only uses that single midi channel, and you have to put your plugin settings to OMNI or else it does not recieve the MIDI data...

  • Yes, I'm talking about INSIDE VEP...

You set the channel in Play to match the one assigned in VEP.

    1. Set Port in VEP
    2. Set MIDI channel to Omni in VEP
    3. Set required individual MIDI channel in Kontakt.

I'm guessing that the multiple Play audio outputs you create inside VE Pro5 are there only for audio processing and mixing purposes, and that the MIDI assignments are done elsewhere. I think you should try the simple test I suggested earlier, it will only take a minute or two - load the three instruments into one instance of Play inside VE Pro5, assign the three instruments to MIDI channels 1, 2 & 3 repectively in Play's interface but leave the main channel assigned by VE set to Omni (it should then read 'All'). You then need to select the right MIDI channel for each instrument on your master keyboard. I just did this in VE Pro4 and it works.
