    Do solid state drives perform worse as they near capacity? For example, do they slow down when they are 75 or 80% full?

    no, they don't ... most controllers ourdays actually are storing data randomly across all available cells to avoid writing to certain memory-cells too often. no spinning parts, (almost) no latency, no fast or slow areas on a disk ...

    and remember: only a CRAY can run an endless loop in just three seconds.

    It actually depends on the design of the SSD's controller. Some SSDs see almost no performance degradation as they fill up, while others benefit greatly from over-provisioning. It also tends to be the case that on SSDs that do see performance degradation at capacity, it is writes that suffer, while reads perform about the same.

    In short, read some thorough reviews. I highly recommend AnandTech.
