  • How do I setup pre-effect/pre-instrument plugins?

I have a very simple case here but it looks like VEP 5 can't handle it. Hopefully I am wrong.

I am hosting the EastWest Hollywood series in VEP and I have setup each instrument with articulations in it's own instance of Play. So for example I have all the french horn articulations I want to use in a single instance of Play. Each articulation for the french horns lives on a different midi channel (legato = channel 1, staccato = channel 2, etc.).

Prior to using VEP I hosted these Play instances in my DAW and placed Bidule just before Play in the fx chain. This allowed me to create keyswitches that changed the midi channel and consequently changed articulations on the french horns. This is a great setup but I wanted to start hosting in VEP in order keep my DAW projects light weight and have a template that is always up and running.

    PROBLEM:

Here is where the problem arises. I can't find a way to insert Bidule prior to Play within VEP. Doing so will allow me to route 16 midi channels (16 instruments, NOT 16 articulations) to VEP and have VEP handle the various articulations for each instrument using Bidule. In other words, I would like to:

    1. Send french horns to VEP on midi channel 1
    2. Have VEP accept midi channel 1 on a specific channel stripe using Bidule (and or Play)
    3. Have Bidule send its midi output to the french horn Play instance, (either on the same channel strip or a different one)

Basically, each instrument has its own Bidule and Play instance. Bidule reads the midi keyswitches and changes midi channels to the appropriate articulation within the Play instance. This is extremely easy to do in Reaper but I can't figure out how to do it in VEP.

Any help will be *greatly* appreciated!

  • Why not send Channel messages in the first place, instead of keyswitches?

  • This doesn't get around the 16 channel limitation. I need to send everything for a single instrument to VEP on one midi channel.

  • 16 channels per MIDI port. Use a port for each instrument.

  • Oh that sounds great! Thanks for your help. How does a port differ from a channel and how would I select a different port in my DAW?

  • Actually, I found out that I have to use the VEP event plugin. That was totally unclear but I found a few people explaining the process. It works! Thanks for your help! Alan
