  • Router Specifications for Optimal VSL LAN?

I'm in the process of setting up a PC slave that will run with my Mac master via ethernet cable. I want internet access for both computers through a router. I understand all the connections need to be gigabit. But are there any particular specifications for the router that are important for a problem-free operation with VEPro5/MIR and Cubase 6.5? Thanks! - Jim

  • what you will need is a switch - a router just provides access (a route, a gateway) to the internet.

don't choose the cheapest, watch out for the features *broadcast storm control* and *supports jumbo packets*

now your post indicates you just have a modem (DSL, cable?) which provides a single (dynamic?) IP for one computer, so it makes sense to add a (private) router into the chain which has a built-in switch.

on one hand the model you can choose depends on your internet provider (will the modem accept this router?) and on the other hand the built-in switch should support the features mentioned above.

i personally have always been fine with Netgear, Cisco, LinkSys

  • If your Master Mac has 2 ethernet ports, you connect one port to Internet router/ADSL and the other port to your Slave no switch needed. Fix IP address required for the slave

If you dont know how to ; you can inspire of this example : http://cyrilblanc.fr/site_principal/slave_mac.html
