Basic Networking Question
Hi, please excuse what is probably a stupid newbie question. I recently purchased VEP 5, and wish to use it on the 2 computers in my studio. My main computer is an Early 2009 Mac Pro, and I have a 2012 Mac Mini I'd like to use as a slave. I have a Vienna Key for each computer. The 2 computers are connected via ethernet to an all-in-one DSL modem/router/wireless hub. The ethernet speed on the router is 100Mbits/sec. Both computers are capable of gigabit ethernet. If I connect the computers to gigabit ethernet switch, and then connect that switch to the current router, will I get the gigabit ethernet connection between the 2 computers I need for VEP 5, while still still sharing the internet connection through the router? Thanks!

If it's simply master to one slave, you do not need any switch, the CAT6 cable suffices.

Yes and follow : http://cyrilblanc.fr/site_principal/slave_mac.html
Most of Macpro have 2 x Ethernet port ;o) (one port can go to your Internet router and the other to the slave)
You can check after if you are using a gigabite connection looking in "About this Mac"
I have not tried using the 2 x ports to a gigabit switch and monitoring the Ethernet trafic to see if you can double the Ethernet traffic between two Macpro ; did somebody check this ?

... while still still sharing the internet connection through the router?to my knowledge the mac mini has only one ethernet port ... so either you have to use the solution adding a gigabit switch or use internet connection sharing on your mac pro (since i understand you like to use internet also on the mini).
the minimum requirement for cables in gigabit networks is cat-5E, but cat-6 or higher wouldn't hurt 😉
and remember: only a CRAY can run an endless loop in just three seconds.
