  • Setting up Logic Pro X with the multiport environment and Kontakt 5

    Hi Guys

First of all sorry i can't seem to write my post in paragraphs (Forum Newbie)

Just wondering what the process is to get all of this working.

First of all I have imported the multiport layer which the cabling had to be reassigned in Logic Pro X.

I have Each VEP multi connected to its respective port 1-16 , and ports 1-16 connected to the all ports object.

I then load up a multi timbral software instrument track, connect it to the all ports object and add the Vienna Ensemble Pro Multi 16 out server plugin.

I can get Kontakt working with the software instruments multitimbral tracks with the first instance of Kontakt and i have this connected to Ve Pro Midi port one on the PC slave. I would also like to know how to setup the auxiliaries for Logic X and Ve Pro 5

My Confusion begins to happen when i want to load a second instance of Kontakt for another 16 channels in the same Ve pro 5 instance i have loaded in the original software instrument track. Do i create a new software instrument track or just more midi tracks to be able to access VE Port 2 from the multiport environment.

On the audio side of things, I also saw a guy on youtube add input channels instead of using auxiliary outs in VE Pro 5 (clicking the plus sign)and then assign them to his kontakt outs. I'm confused how to get all the stereo outputs configured as well in VE Pro 5.

Ideally I would like to have maybe 4 Kontakts for each section (Strings, Brass, Perc + Winds) in one instance of Ve Pro 5 to have 48 channels all wired to logic Pr X i guess (Be interested how anyone divides up there instances of VE Pro on a Slave PC as well)

I hope this post isn't too confusing but i was originally working with Pro tools which seemed to be a bit easier to setup than Logic.

Hopefully someone out there is using this combination.

    All the best to everyone

    Simon

  • Hello Simon,

You are right - the latest version of Logic Pro X seems to be unable to correctly import Environment Layers and randomly cables the contained elements, so right now, your only option is indeed to re-cable the entire Environment Layer in your own Logic project.

I have also replied to your support request and attached an example project, which should show how to set up one VE Pro instance with f.i. two multitimbral instances of Kontakt.

  • if you're referring to the instructions for creating an environment (in the VEPro manual), it doesn't work for me either. Is there another workaround? very frustrating. I wish it was as simple as Cubase 7.

  • Hi jspencer,

Please contact us at , we´ll provide you with a working template.

  • I'm having an issue as well.

I have the multiport setup in Logic X with VEP and everything is great until I try and add more than one instrument into an instance of Kontakt. The first instrument outputs correctly to it's port & midi channel, but the subsequent instruments do not. I would like to fix this so that I don't have to run a separate instance of Kontakt outside of VEP in Logic.

    Thoughts?

    Hi,

I have loaded your template VE Pro 5 Multiport 6x16 Ports Logic Pro X.

How can I use the for example in Logic VE Pro 1 Midi Port 2 (Kanal: Sub 2) - how can I open a new plugin like Kontakt in VE 5 with that Midi Port 2 ?

    Best

    Rainer

  • Hi Rainer,

It should all be there in the template.

Please send me a screenshot of where you are stuck: support@vsl.co.at

    Thanks,

  • I've loaded up the 6x16, but I am unclear on how it works. If I record enable a MIDI track, I cannot hear anything unless I also record enable the INST track that points to the VEP Instance. But if I record, then it records onto both tracks. Furthermore, if I delete the MIDI data from the INST track and just leave the MIDI track's MIDI data, then the track does not sound at all. Is there a tutorial that goes with these templates?

  • Nevermind. I figured out the problem. The default Templates supplied by VSL had errors in the Environment upon loading. I figured out where the mistakes were and fixed them, all is well and working now.

  • I know this post is a bit old, but I'm trying to figure out the VSL environment in Logic X now and I can't get it to work.  Any chance you could explain what the 'errors in the environment' were, and how you fixed them?  Or could VSL update their multiport layer with a corrected version?  the newest one I see is over 2 years old.

When I load a VEP instrument in Logic, I can access 16 channels on that one instrument.  But there's no way to access the other 'multi-ports' of MIDI, and when I assign channels to them, they go nowhere.

I'm also having this issue (using VE Pro 6 & Logic 10.3.3)

Is there an updated multiport template?

    Thankyou.

  • Hi,

There is no updated Multiport Template, I'm afraid.

The template should work as intended if you don't change any parameters and follow the instructions in the manual... you can also send us your original logic song, to check.

Personally, I'd stick with multiple VE PRO instances and wait for AU v3, which is high on the to-do list after Synchron Player.

Yes, avoid it like the plague 😊

Yes, avoid it like the plague 😊 Ha ha! Okay, I will do! Thank you, F

  • Just about to set this up myself but with Play. So multiple instances are ok to use despite the manual stating that VE PRO "will generally perform best when running as few instances as possible"? I'm imagining that it needs to be an instance per port which would mean in my case at least 30-40 instances. Is this better than using the Event Input Plug-in? I will be using SkiSwitcher to manage articulation switching and 'CC Cloning'.

In this case what is the optimal setting for Multiprocessing? My CPU is a quad-core with hyper-threading so should I set it to 8?

Apologies for newbie questions but I'm just getting started!

    Thanks,

    Mark

  • Can you not use a midi channel per instrument? Which would give you 16 instruments per instance. Then you would have one instrument per midi channel. The only reason not to would be if you are using something like LA scoring strings where you need to have use of more than one midi channel per instrument. That is what I am doing - and it seems to be working out so far!

  • I need to use several midi channels per instrument in order to cover all the different articulations of each instrument. So I envisage that each instance will correspond to one instrument with the possibility of up to 16 articulations. This is how I do it in Logic using Play/Hollywood Orch. Each Play instance is dedicated to a single instrument with all its articulations. Now I'm an absolute beginner when it comes to VEPro so I might have misunderstood how it works (just about to embark on my 2nd read through of the manual!) so I'll have to see what happens when I start to set it up.

  • I understand. That is the way I have my LASS currently set up. I have one instance for Violins, one instance for Violas and so on.

Other plugins, like Vienna Instruments, handle keyswitching on their own so there is no need for more than one midi channel.

  • Ah ok thanks. Sounds like having multiple instances is working ok for you so I'll go ahead on that basis. I have Multiprocessing set to 2 threads due to the number of instances - I think that's what someone recommended at some point.
