  • Transferring Samples from Mac to PC

    Hello,

I just recenttly got a Windows PC up and running to use as a slave in the VE Pro configuration. My previous setup was just a Macbook Pro. and an external drive to stream samples. Have 2 questions related to transferring the samples from that external drive, to a secondary drive on the PC:

    1) What format should the secondary drive on the PC be? NTFS? FAT32? Something else? I will use this drive solely just to store samples.

    2) What is the easiest/fastest method of transferring the samples from the external drive (formatted for Mac OS journaled), to the secondary drive on the PC? Ethernet? Remote desktop connection? Another angle I haven't thought about?

    Thanks!

  • ad 1) NTFS is the more reliable format, FAT32 is the more compatible format (though OSX can read NTFS out of the box, it just cannot write to NTFS without a third party tool) ... i would choose NTFS

ad 2) given your ethernet is gigabit transfer via network wouldn't be much slower than any other method.

either share the source directory (mac) for reading and pull data from the share or the destination directory (PC) for writing and push data to the share.

note: if your workgroup names on mac and PC are not the same they may not see each other in finder/explorer - try to access via IP then.

i often noticed problems with the SMB protocol between PC and mac since various OSX versions use different SMB protocol versions - your version might not be compatible with the one used on the PC ... just give it a try.

  • Thanks for the advice and note! Will give it a go!

  • Was able to set up ethernet network using SMB, and pushed data from the mac side (MacOS Journaled) onto the shared destination on PC side (NTFS).

However, sometimes during the sample libraries transfer process, I get an error -50 message on the Mac, and the transfer stops.

I have yet to try transferring files other than sample libraries, so not sure if this is problem-specific. I can also see the last file which was transferred before getting the error. When I attempt to manually drag over that individual file, and the one that sequentially comes after it, no errors.

So far, the errors seems to be specific to ceratin libraries (i.e. certain folders), but occur at "random" times. No other observable pattern yet.

    Anyone have something similiar happen?

    Thanks.

Update: I've also gotten error codes -8058 and -36. -50 still seems to occur the most. I'll google and look into those codes when time. If anyone has any input, please share!

  • I had to do the same thing about 4 years ago - move my sample libraries from my Mac over to PC.  Like you I thought it was a simple thing to just transfer them across the ethernet connection.  And, like you, I ran into problems.   In the end, I just re-installed everything (all the big libraries anyway) from the master disks.   It was much easier and hassle-free - it just ate up some time.  I also transfered small libraries (couple GBs) via USB stick.

My advise would be to just reinstall.  Put on some good music and start feeding DVDs into your drives...... :)

  • these errors indicate permission issues - but hey: what permission should that be using SMB to a share?

the error message might come from finder (as application) ... HFS/HFS+ (aka mac os extended) or HFSJ (aka journaled) or its compressed versions have (like NTFS) a feature called alternate filestream (on OSX also used as resource fork).

almost every file on your mac has such a resource fork, possibly it is even compressed.

if now finder tries to copy such an alternate filestream (to a share or an external harddrive) and runs into problems an error occurs.

i often notice that when copying files (even from NTFS to NTFS) if they originate from a zip-file created on a mac with compressed headers.

fortunately NTFS just asks if i want to skip these additional information and continues copying.

did you also try the other direction (pull data from a share on your mac)?

  • @wgturner - Thanks for the input Greg. Re-install might be the most viable option. I'll try a couple other things first though haha.

@cm - Thanks for the technical advice. New info to me! I'll try pulling data from a share on the mac.

  • Pulling files on the PC, from a share on the mac, seems to be working so far! No interrupted transfers nor errors. The intial setup of creating a share on the mac, and pulling files on the PC, was a little more complex than the reverse process...at least to me haha.

    Thanks everyone.

  • good to hear you succeeded finally ... don't forget to assign locations in the directory manager to tell VI/VE where your samples reside.

    best, cm

  • Thanks! Will do.
