  • Is it possible to connect keyboard controllers to slaves instead of master DAW?

Hi. I'm looking to set up a VEPro network with the main objective to enable several people to perform simultaneously playing various plugin combinations with a range of controllers. Obviously Logic is limited in its ability to multithread while monitoring inputs, so several dedicated 'stations' seems a logical solution. One of the most important considerations is to keep latency as low as possible and I'm concerned that having the controllers connected to the master DAW via USB, which then routed to the slaves and back into master DAW via ethernet and then D/A conversion could make the whole thing unbearable for my purpose. Therefor I have wondered if it might be possible to control the slave PCs directly for lower latency. Does anyone know if this is possible or does MIDI control have to come from the master DAW? I'm guessing it is possible but a more complicated if I needed to also record the MIDI information to the DAW. Please let me know if anyone knows the best approach. Thanks.

  • While slow performance impacts MIDI data via the network, I doubt that <MIDI controller on master> is through itself a significant contributor to latency.

There is the External MIDI setup tab in preferences, you can install your controllers there and try it. I haven't really had any luck with it. AFAIK this is an 'experimental' feature.
