  • Can I run VEP on an older Mac 10.4 (Tiger) to load older libraries?

    Hi everyone,

I need to ressurect some of my older plugins like Steinberg Virtual Guitar.  I have it running on my old Mac G5 with Tiger on my network... so I'm hoping I can access it from my current Master computer if I load it into VEP.

Before I go buy another eliscenser key, I'd like to make sure this is going to work.  Can the folks at VSL or someone here advise me on this?  Much TIA.

  • Hi ,

you have to use the same VEPRO version on both your Master and your slave machine(s).

This will narrow down the possibilities you have with an older machine in combination with current models.

Not long ago I actually still used my G5 in my setup , so here are the specs of that setup :

    Setup until Summer 2011

    PPC G5 / OS X 10.4 / VEPRO 4 Build_4.1.8008

    Macpro / OS X 10.6.8 /  VEPRO 4 Build_4.1.8008

    ( Actually VSL released VEPRO4  until version 4.1.11889  in December 2012 ,

however I used the above listed version because it worked flawless on my setup, and

    I didn't dare to change a running horse . )

    After that , until recently:

    PPC G5 / OS X 10.5.8 / VEPRO 5 Build_5.1.11548 ( the last version of VEP5 that worked on PPC )

    Macpro / OS X 10.6.8 /  VEPRO 5 Build_5.1.11548

( The corresponding eLicenser version compatible with PPC was version 6.3.6.1098 , I think. Not quite sure here. )

    These setups worked very well.

However , switching from VEP4 to VEP5 required to rebuild some mframes from scratch , because some of them

    didn't worked properly after a simple conversion ( ... that is opening a VEP4 mframe with VEP5 ) .

In short : you cannot use the current available version of VEPRO5 on your PPC.

Instead you have to use a former version of VEP on both your PPC and your current machine.

While VEP4 is still available in the download section , I can not see the "VEP5 version Build_5.1.11548" which worked

    on PPC with OS X 10.5.8 .

    Hope this helps ,

    best wishes

    Gerd

  • Thank you Gerd,  this helps a great deal. But can you use both VEP5 and the older version on the master machine at the same time?

Reason being, I'd rather keeping using VEP5 to trigger my Mac mini slave. And load the older VEP version on the master to access the old G5. Is that possible or can you only use one version of VEP at a time on the master in Logic?

  • No, that won't work. You can't have two different versions of VEP in use at the same time.
