    I'm relatively new to Vienna Instruments. I'm trying to run several different instruments in a single instance of Vienna Instruments (that is, in a single instrument track in Logic Pro), and I want to assign different MIDI channels to each instrument. There must be a way to do it, but so far I haven't found it in the plug-in, nor have I been able to find it in the Vienna Instruments Manual (v3.2).

    VI is not multitimbral, and will only recieve data on one MIDI channel. you'll want to use Vienna Enseble (free dowload) to host multipul instance of VI.

    Vienna Instruments is mono timbral. To do what you want you will need to use Vienna Ensemble, which is also a free download.

    Thanks, Bill and DG. I've spent relatively little time in Vienna Ensemble, but I played with it enough to have found some other limitations that make it not ideal for my workflow,. But perhaps I need to explore it more.

    Just curious — can I accomplish what I want in Vienna Instruments Pro?

    If you in Logic add an Vienna Ensemble track and letting it send to all channels, you can access 16 different instruments in the Ensemble window. You gonna load different sounds in different vienna instruments in you Vienna Ensemble window, but you can play them from one single track in Logic and choose which one by giving your notes specific MIDI Channels.

    If you just want to play unison phrases, with Vienna Instruments Pro you can load different instruments in slots. But as said, they'll play unison (you can make transposing offsets) but you won't be able to get to them separately.

    VI and VI pro = Monotimbral, one midi channel only.

    You could use Vienna ensemble for this.

    If not, use multiple instances of Vienna Instruments. And if you want, you could use an external midi track to controls multiple instances at once (use the environement window to patch a midi track to multiple instruments tracks.)

    Even better and simpler, if you decide to upgrade to Logic Pro X, use the new track stack to merge multiple instruments track to one audio/midi track stack. that's cool

    OK, got it...thanks. I was initially loading Vienna Ensemble into Logic as a multi-timbral instrument, which created 16 instances of the track (Instrument 19). That might be useful for certain things, but I didn't need to do that. Just loading it into a single stereo track, setting the track to receive on all channels, and then assigning different MIDI channels to each instrument within Vienna Ensemble gets the job done.

    Too bad it's not polyphonic. Do I have to upgrade to VE Pro to get polyphony?

    VE is polyphonic, you have multiple midi inputs and audio outputs.

    I don't have a problem with using multiple instances of Vienna Instruments. In fact, I was already having to do that because it's monophonic. As far as I can tell, I have to shell out for VI Pro to get polyphony...or, at least I assume that's what is meant by "polyphonic legato" in the VI Pro features list.

    I'm working on some projects that I don't want to disrupt with an upgrade to Logic X. I'll eventually upgrade when I can do it with a minimum of disruption, but for right now Logic 9 has everything I need for the projects I'm working on.

    I don't think we're using the term "polyphonic" in the same way. By polyphonic, I mean that I can play more than one note on the same instrument at the same time. For example, if I want French horns to play in harmony, I can do it all on the same track, on the same instrument, without assigning the notes to different MIDI channels. If there's a way to get VE to do that, I haven't figured it out yet.

    Sorry for the confusion,

    You are right, polyphonic legato is exclusive to VI Pro according to the product comparison page http://www.vsl.co.at/en/211/497/537/1456/2452/2109.htm.

    So you need Vienna instruments pro, Vienna Ensemble Pro won't help for that.

    OK, thanks for clarifying that. It looks like there's a VI Pro upgrade in my future.
