  • Bang Sound in Trailer Music. Which patches from VSL?

    Hi,

I am trying to recreate this "bang" sound you hear so often in trailer music, but I am not successful thus far.

Here is one example (at 0:18 seconds):

    Inception Trailer Music

Which patches I have to layer from VSL to achieve this kind of sound? I have the full percussion library. My initial guess was to layer bassdrum and timpani but no luck in getting it sounding as powerful.

Any pointers would be greatly appreciated!

    Thank you!

    -N.

  • [quote=nektarios]Hi,

Sounds like a Braaam with a Taiko drum.

  • Thank you. But I am still not able to recreate it. :-( This sound is very common in trailer and in action movies.

The Taiko is key in action trailers. vi-control.net is mostly people trying to sound like H. Zimmer, and Zimmer himself posts there and sometimes replies to questions, so maybe worth asking there. I'm 100% sure that's a Taiko at 00:18; not sure what more you want, or maybe you want the entire sound? I wouldn't know how to recreate the full sound, but I'd be working with the lowest brass.

  • Thank you. Will give it a shot. I am not after the brass sound but more that percussion bang sound. I guess it's a taiko, but I am sure it's layered with something else. Maybe timpani? Bass drum? I tried it, but still I feel something is missing. :-/

I have no idea about the layering, but I hear the reverb on the percussion going at least 3 or 4 seconds.

    You want what Zimmer does?

Bang on a cardboard box like a moron and record it then apply massive amounts of reverb.

Then you will achieve your goal.

The fact that Zimmer appears there - like a God to his little sycophantic worshippers - does not impress me.  In fact, I am one of his Anti-Christs.  Everything he does - I ignore.  However, I don't do the opposite of him - that would be giving him too much credence.  I simply ignore everything he ever did.  Then I know I might actually achieve something in music.

by the way - there are some other people you might listen to and pay attention to besides Zimmer.

  • If I ever become a sycophant, please put me out of my misery.

  • Thank you William. Actually, the link I pasted above is NOT from Hans Zimmer, it's from Zack Hemsey. In fact, in all the music that I hear this sound, and I like, it is almost NEVER is from Hans Zimmer. This is not even trying to imitate Hans Zimmer... All I want is knowing how to reproduce a certain sound without really paying attention to who made it.

  • my bad:

"it is a common misconception that the piece for this trailer was composed by Hans Zimmer because Zimmer composed the official score for the movie itself."

  • Hahah.

i just did a search of some of my previous posts. Hehehe. Did I really say that about Mike Verta? Only kidding of course. He's an excellent pianist.

soooo... Dear old Hans again. [H]

  • Sorry nektarios, I missed an injection last week.

  • Perhaps bang your head against a tightly wrung Taiko real hard? Or against a Project Sham box?

Anyway, I would be much more concerned about what comes after the 1-second bang (perhaps another bang?)

I just chimed in here to warn against any and all slides against the Arpeggiator god who, SO inspired, has offered us all so very much so very much so very much so very much so very much so very much so very much so very much so very much so very much so very much so very much so very much so very much so very much so very much so very much so very much so very much so very much so very much so very much so very much so very much so very much so very much so very much so very much so very much so very much so very much so very much so very much..........ad infinitum.........

  • I honestly don't understand some of these angry and rambling posts. All I asked was a simple question and it seems I opened up some kind of pandoras box. I honestly don't get some of these posts.

  • You think these are angry posts? You should have seen the email I got from one of the posters this morning.

I only came here under fear and threat of death and destruction of what remains of our empire.

What I think people are saying here is try and be new. Try and be a bit more yourself and original. If you can't be original - be aboriginal.

Anything to stop these fearful, destructive, life threatening emails. And btw. Hans Z wouldn't want you to copy  him or his sounds. If I find you copied Hans - I'm warning you now - I'm going to the Police.

  • haha! Again, the sound I am trying to recreate is not from Hans Zimmer (it's from Zack Hemsey). It is a classic movie trailer bang sound which you hear in many different films by different composers. It almost sounds the same in all of them.

I totally agree on being original, but by saying I am not being original because I picked a *sound* that is used most often in trailer music, is like saying don't use violins/violas/cellos for your orchestra as it won't be original. If I want to create an action trailer, that sound is almost necessary.

I am not aiming to reproduce the sound 100% but get pointers as to where the main drum sound comes from as I am new in orchestration -- then I can create my own bang sound with a bang! :-)

  • I'm sorry I can't help you with the drum sound because I haven't listened to it.

i can't listen to banging sounds or trailer music.  The last time I heard trailer music Hitchcock was in the trailer personally and I then went out and slaughtered an entire community.

  • I already got my answer, so all good now!
