  • VSL Special Edition Strings vs. Appassionata Strings

Greetings, I have a basic question regarding the two strings collections. I understand that the Appassionata Strings is a much more advanced collection than what is present in the Special Edition. My main question is about this: I'm actually fine with the Special Edition's strings for now, they serve my immediate needs. My problem with it, is that I need to spend a great deal of time to achieve the smoothest legato-transitions. It works, but only after substantial amounts of time. My question: together with the Appassionata strings being more comprehensive, is this collection also a time-saver? Is it much faster process to create smooth and nuanced transitions than with Special Edition? Thanks in advance.

  • Hi!

You seem to mix up 3(!) different categories which are not directly connected.

1)Appassionata Strings - is only a kind of ensemble recorded and released by VSL. Its a product label. There are Chamber, Orchestra, and Solo Strings as well - none of those labels should imply any "sampling" qualities.

2)Special Edition - is a special line of products, which DOES imply certain specifics of its contents (mainly being very basic set of articulations, and stripped down samples count). It may, in turn, include all the mentioned types of String ensembles - so in short, your product, being Special Edition, IS of the basic, introduction type of product - and may include different ensemble sizes.

3)VSL`s legato is tied to specific articulations and their usage in the right musical context, so by using the main "legato" articulation from Special Edition, you are already getting the tech. The Full library does have larger sample count indeed - but I doubt it has anything to do with its "smooth" transitioning. I would rather look into musical context, or consider other articulations in some situations. The full libraries DO offer you wealth of other articulations, which enhance your sound pallette, thus the high price tag.
